Telling Gender for the First Time - Please double check my findings

A couple of days ago I posted a pic to ask a question about a plant that was growing crazy branches all over. Someone told me the plant was mature so I just checked them all to see if I could confirm that they're fem. They all come from clones so they should be, but you can't trust the dispensories in this area.

I started with the 2 Blueberry plants because the first one looks exactly like a drawing of a fem calyx in a book I bought. One of them is probably a Medocino County Purp. Like I said, you can't trust the dispensories around here.

So Bluberry 1-1 to me looks fem. Bluberry 2-1's calyx may not be developed enough to tell yet, but I think she's starting to look fem.

I had to put my finger behind the calyx of the NY Diesel so you can see it better. I really have no clue with this one, but they don't look like balls so I'm guessing fem.

I saved the Opiums for last because they're the plants that look the least like normal plants. I think it's been FIM'd before, it's growing branches from branches. So Opium 1-1 & 1-2 are two angles of the same calyx. Again I can't tell but they don't look like balls so I'm guessing fem.

Opium 2-1 & 2-2 are 2 different calyxs on the same plant. One may not be developed enough to tell, and the other one is more developed than any pics or drawings I've run across. Again they don't look like balls so I'm guessing fem.

If any of these plants aren't mature yet, please let me know and give me a clue as to what I missed so I don't make the mistake again in the future.

On the ones that have reached maturity, am I right on some of them at least?

so these are clones? if they are clones they are whatever gender of the plant they were taken from. you will need to veg for a few weeks then flower them to see the sex if you are unsure of the parent plants sex. hope this helps.

Look fem to me but closer pics would help if possible.
I've had problems with dispensary clones but it was strain not gender trouble. I can't imagine anyone selling to dispensaries cloning a male, hard to make that mistake.

These are clones but I didn't clone them myself. I bought them from dispensories. 1 of my Blueberries ended up being a Mendocino County Purp and I was sold 3 other clones that turned out to be rootless clippings. So I have to double check the sex to be on the safe side.

By the way, clipping = no roots (harder to take care of) and clone = rooted clipping. It really is a shame that the dispensories around here don't even know that much.

Also, if you keep your plant in veg long enough it will mature and show you it's sex even though you haven't put it into flower yet. Since most clones come from the same mother plant and the mother plant can last indefinately giving more & more clones every couple of weeks, most clones you come across will already be mature.

Sorry about the pics. This is my first grow and I could only afford a $20 computer cam that takes stills. If I got any closer the focus gets blurry as heck.

I wouldn't expect the dispensories to make that mistake either. Not realizing that they sold me a different strain isn't that bad. But when I returned to this one dispensory to complain about the clones they sold me dieing because they were unrooted clippings and the only lighting I have is 400w MH & HPSs, the grower turned around and told me that clones & clippings were the same thing. For a professional grower, that is gross incompetance, so I can't take any chances.

That first pic (blueberry 1-1) doesn't look mature enough to tell? I thought that one was mature enough for sure.

Yeah, we got a bunch of business men opening dispensories that probably never rolled a joint before in their lives. And they all seem to be making bad decisions when they hire a grower, the probably don't want to pay what a real grower is worth, and they get what they pay for.

BTW, if the pics aren't good enough to see, can someone post some links for threads with good pics I can use to learn how to judge better? Hopefully showing the calyx in different stages.

Ok, I was just going on what one guy told me (that they were mature already). But I've been given bad advice before so I half expected them to not be ready yet.

I just figured if I could tell I should do it now so if any are males I don't loose any more than the two weeks that I've put into them so far.

well you have alternating nodes, and yes it should show signs while vegging, usually if its female the hair will pop out once you first see sign, if there is no hair and its raised alittle off the node its probably male, ive never bought a clone before but i would expect it to be rooted when i got it. What were they in when you got them.

They already have alternating nodes, especially the Opiums who have branches growing from branches. Were the calyxs that I took pics of not develped enough maybe? Or too developed? Or are they too hard to see in the pic?

I actually went to 4 different dispensories to get 2 from each. Of the 4 none seemed to really know what they were doing and only 1 really gave me a fair shake. But his partner sold me an unrooted clipping saying it was a clone (3rd clipping). But the original guy I dealt with drove out to my house the next day and replaced the dead clipping with a Purple Passion rooted clone. So at least I know I'll get a fair shake from that dispensory, I just have to carefull not to deal with his partner.

All of them have hairs but I usually can't see them right away. And I think I read somewhere that both male & fem have hairs. But there's just too much new growth at the tops of the plants to get a good look until the new growth developes.

I think my biggest problem is I've only seen 2 pics (1 or M & 1 of F) and a couple of drawings. If I could get my hands on a half dozen M & half doz fem I'd probably be able to figure it out.

Go to the box where you type the message. Below that box you'll see a button named "go advanced", click that.

When the new screen comes up scroll down a little and you'll see a button named "manage attatchments", click that.

A new window will open. At the top of this window there's 4 slots with buttons next to them named "browse". Click this button and a search window will open, search your computer for the pic & double click it. The search window will close and you'll be back at the "manage attatchments box"

Repeat this process with the next window if you have another pic to post.

Don't close the box yet, on the right you'll see a button named "upload". When you've found & double clicked all the pics you want to post click the "upload button". After it uploads the boxes will be empty again.

Then just close the "manage attatchments box" and type the message that you want to go with the pics.

When you say "see sign", what sign do you mean. The drawing I have show little pods, the fem has a hair sticking out and males are just opened a little.

Is the sign I should be looking for a little pod? And if yes, what does it look like once it matures some? (in case I don't see it before it matures)

They came in some kind of pete moss cubes. On the last one I looked for roots before leaving the shop but mistook a piece of perlite for a root tip. This time I slowly peeled away the cube looking for roots and ended up exposing a naked stem with no roots, not even a root nub starting. But from now on the only way I'll ever buy a clone from someone is if they have a strain I want & can't find seeds for.

I'm about to build my rooting station so from now on I'll be making my own clones in dirt. I'm not real comfortable with watering plants in cubes.
