Work Advice

Hi,

I'm so pissed off at my employer and I need some good advice or words of wisdom to stop me from quitting. I am this --- --- close to quitting. Like a few centimeters.

I've been working at this place for 1.5 years. The regional manager said I "own" my job. I have been told I do a great job. I save the company a bunch of money in shipping costs.

My boss is the definition of a boss who uses nepotism. Over the last few months he has fired most people who aren't his family or friends and then hired people who are. After 1.5 years I am making equal to or less than new hires. It is fucking bullshit. Today someone that just got hired for an easy ass part-time job is making more than me. My boss' step-mom told me about the job before I got it and said it's good money. When I told her what I am starting at she was shocked (not good money). Definitely much less than he offered his step-mom for the job. Basically I am helping train people who are making more than me, even though I have been told I do a good job. I'm just not related to or a friend of my boss. Even his relatives and friends get more overtime than others. His brother gets 25 hours overtime bi-weekly while most are limited to 11.

Can someone please give me some good advice on this because I am so close to quitting this motherfucker. Shady ass nepotism. I don't want to quit but how the fuck do I tolerate this?

Very simple....find a new job before you quit. If you can't find one keep looking but don't quit until you do find one. Jobs, even jobs that suck, are hard to find right now.
That's what I would do
+rep for spelling, grammar, and puntuation. Rare comodities these days.

Fuck him, start looking for other jobs, when you get hired at the other job, keep working there up until the day when the next day you start your next job. Then you can say every single word you've ever wanted to say to him. It always feels so good. It sucks, I mean I've had a few of the same experiences... And I was like, oh yeah, I start tomorrow at "next job" and I just wanted to let you know that you can take this job and shove it up your ass. It's so great to be able to say that. And who cares what you tell him, if you get a good reputation at your next job, his shitty report on you won't matter.

That's the problem. GM shut down in my city and there are just a whole lot of people looking for a whole notta amount of jobs. I have been planning on moving away from here but didn't want to do that until end of next summer. I just don't see how I can keep getting stepped all over and mis-treated by my employer any longer. I know I should just toughen up and take this bullshit a few more months or something.

that hurts so fucking bad bro, i had the same thing happen to me, but worse probally(im a shift leader where i work, i started at 6.50 as crew, didnt get a raise like of should of w/the promotion. then our gm went and hired like 6 new people who made at least 1.00 more than me and were just normal crew and knew jackshit(no offense towards them, we all gotta start somewhere.) my advice is to find another job and then when you do find a new job make sure you make it is as absolutely painful/hard on them as possible when you quit lol

I'd look for another job and start saving as much money as you can. It sounds like he's using you to train his new employees while paying you less. This happened to a friend of mine who was an editor for the local paper. He worked there for 4 years, and then one day they hired another guy for a certain job. No big deal. They have my friend train this guy to do the job he's supposed to do, and he was also trained to do my friends job on days he wasn't there, which was like 1 or 2 days a week. They ended up laying my friend off and paying the guy he trained WAY less than what he was making. You won't win in a situation where he's hiring family. I suggest you try your best to find a new job. Don't quit until you have a good plan.

As silly as it sounds, there is an art to being a good hourly employee without being manipulated by whoever you work for. If you work too hard, they wonder why when you don't do other peoples jobs. If you don't do enough, they'll also wonder why.

Thanks for all the advice. It definetely hurts. I have been basically giving my life to this damn place. I had to miss Thanksgiving with my family because i had to work Friday. All the shit I sacrifice and I just get fucking stepped on. I need to cover this up though because when I found out all these new hires were making more than me I basically ignored/avoided my boss out of anger and he asked me why I was being so quit. I didn't tell him. I am afriad to speak my mind because that would just be a reason for him down the road to shit-can me when he has a family member that needs a job.

Start looking for a new one just in case but talk to him about it say everything about him paying you shit and him paying his friends more and ask for a raise if he says no tell him to fuck himself. You would probably be better off taking it up with someone hire up then him who works there. But if it don't work that's what the other job is for good luck with it all.

If you don't want to quit your job..

You are wanting to explore other routes to get this situation solved.

If I where in your situation I would do the following.

Firstly, explain to your boss that you have been working there for 1.5 years and your are working hard etc & that you are saving the company a lot of money wit shipping, if possible could you work out annually what you are saving the company? and present him with the figures, this way it will show you have done your math, your doing extra work and you also have good intentions for the company, working harder than those new starters etc. I would also ask after this if there is any chance for you to get higher within the company, more hours and more pay...

If that doesn't work out, I don't know if you have something called HR? here in uk we have HR who we can write to and explain our situation and they can help mediate with the problem and they give an outcome to the problem (I don't know if you guys in usa have HR or the equivalent?)

I wouldn't also bring his relatives or friends etc into this, play this cool. If you bring them into it, he may take it as a personal attack.. then deffo no chance of progressing with getting the situation solved.

Just play situation cool, intellegentily and look like your listening (Or pretend :) )

Don't get angry, that will not help anything, if you say fuck the job that easily and think it's that easy to get another job, if you do you will carry on the rest of your life that way.

Look to take all possible routes to resolve this issue, then once you have looked to solve problem, if you however don't get it solved, then your safe in the knowledge that you tried and then can stay or start looking for a another job.

But just dont think fuck it, that's the easy way.

Think to get it solved. :)

Good Luck mate.:peace:

Thanks for the response and advice! I am so mad but I know you are right. I'm just worried what happens when my boss has another family member that needs a job and needs to get rid of someone to get them that job.

most likely if you talk to him his response will be "well, i really wish i could give you a raise(which is total bs of course) but we just cant afford it."
That's exactly what he would say.

When you apply for a new job and currently work at a job, what do you put for your reason? I obviously can't say because of nepotism or unfair pay. Any ideas of a good reason?

You need more hours. Saying his pay is shitty isn't going to work, but saying you weren't getting enough hours at your previous job is good.

He might say that but you must try and say to him, at least you tried, don't be afraid to speak up & show your wanting more. If you are training these people you are an asset to the company and saving them money in shipping.

Speak to him, see what he says..

No harm in asking...

you could also do what I said in last post as well.

At least when you speak to him about it, he's now aware of your situation. Remember keepin it in or thinking he might say that no money etc.. but you are also saving them money, if you leave they will need a new employer who will train all the newbies etc.

Bring some attention to your situation, as not saying anything your boss might think everything is ok.

Remember you wont get the situation solved if you don't say anything and keep it all inside.
