if the plant is really healthy it will usually recover from topping fully in 3-7 days.

i try to only clone from tops if i can, they are always the fastest to root and the best cuttings imo. some sources say the bottom branches are best, but when i clone tops it always rocks!

Yes. Cloning a top is fine. Sometimes they are harder to root, depending on age and woody-ness. Softer stemmed young tops work quite well though. New growth can take up to 3+ weeks to show, so be patient! I've had clones I thought were dead and gone that still made it through. Use clear cups and you can see if/when roots form. Once you have roots the plant will probably survive.

Edit: Misunderstood question two. You'll see new growth on the topped plant within a few days. I was referring to growth on the clone. Sorry.

I think it is quite the opposite. Bottom branches are the best because they have lower levels of hormones, or something to that effect. But it doesn't really matter. I think bottom tend to root more easily.

when you top a plant, the stem that's chopped never really does much of anything, but all the lower side shoot rise up and take over. i know its often worded that 'two shoots' come out if you top, but that's just referring to the other already existing branches that become the new tops.

jerry garcia- i know that cloning from bottom branches is the 'right' way, and yet when i clone from tops its faster and makes better plants than those from bottom branches. either way, i always get roots.
similar story, i never use rooting hormone of any kind anymore, 100% rate of success, 7-10 days.

I just took 16 clones from the tops of my mothers. The mothers were getting too big for their space.

Its been about 2 weeks and all have roots. The mothers have totally recovered and will need topped again in about a week.

I use a homemade bubbler to clone in. I do use schultz rooting hormone and scrape the the bottom half inch or so of the stem to soften it up.

It's all about what works for you and your plants. You've got an effective system down, and that's what matters. I think the only "right" way to clone is the one that produces roots:mrgreen:

Sourdiesel...try doing it both ways. Experimentation is really the only way to learn for yourself how the plant will react. I love topping and rooting the tops, but if I'm taking multiple cuttings I find the lowest possible healthy branches take root with the least amount of fuss.

Good luck...cloning is a blast!
