What does the country look like when all progressive policies are in place?

Universal healthcare, fixing of our crumbling infrastructure and federal funding for key research in health and technology (stem cells, sustainable energy etc.) strike me as most important/obvious on the domestic front. Not to mention ending the drug war obviously and turning drugs into a public health rather than a law and order issue.

As far as internationally, I'd like to see us be smarter about both our diplomacy and national security, but that's obviously subjective. Reengaging our allies and enemies diplomatically, ending some of the shady stuff we've been doing to prisoners and making sure we can leave afghanistan and iraq in a somewhat acceptable condition seem like good ideas generally speaking...

What does the country look like when all progressive policies are in place?

Each person will be living in 750 square foot high-rise condos. All rents will be collected and paid to the State. To avoid dealing with greedy landlords and slumlords, the State will own all property.

Utilities (water, gas and electric) will be controlled from a central location so that everyone has an equal use of these commodities. A minimum requirement will be established and strictly adherd to.

All transportation will be via bicycle, electric motor-scooters or public transportation.

A new State religion wil be established with Mother Earth as the Savior and unbending environmentalism as the sacrament.

Ego and recognition for individual achievement will be outlawed and offenders will be admitted to insane asylums to participate in "reconditioning" programs.

Cash will be a thing of the past. Buying and selling will be done via electronic transfers of credits and debits through the use of computer chips imbedded under the skin in the forearm.

There will be no "income" as we know it today. All work "credits" will be credited to the State, and the State will apply those credits to individuals as the state bureaucrates deem fit. Don't worry, State records will reflect what each person needs to sustain life.

The IRS will be given new and ever-expanding powers. They will over-see scofflows who try to get away with not buying health insurance, hoarding of gold and other hard assets.

Human reproduction will be controlled by the State. There will be specific breeder classes with a particular eye on a quota system to fill each tier of the new socialist caste system. Not everyone will be allowed to breed, of course ... can't have those undesirable ones multiplying, now can we?

Poverty will be outlawed. An equalibrium of outcomes will be established. The goal is the lowest common denominator at all times.

We will never be a socialist state. All the right-wing nutjobs screaming socialism have no idea what the term really means and should visit a socialist country to see just how far removed we always will be. It's just a fun stick to hit democrats with when you lose elections. It's no more rational than the lefty nutjobs convinced Bush was a conspiring devil instead of the C+ student president trying to do what he thought was right.
