Im starting this thread because i have seen no threads (well im to lazy to search) that talk about the specs and logistics of computers. We are all using one, so why not have a thread where people can talk shop about there Rigs(Not talking about shooting up)!! Ill start, What kinda OS do you all prefer. Me personally i LOVE the new Windows 7!! Even tho i have heard reports that its slower than XP, i dont know if i believe that!Thoughts???

My friend has windows 7 on his laptop and I didn't find it to be slow at all.

but I'm sticking with xp. It does everything I need it to.
Why fix what isn't broken?

Awesome. A fellow pc builder.
I built my first pc about 13 years ago when I couldn't afford to buy a pc and had no credit. so every few paychecks I'd buy a new component until I had enough to throw a pc together.
Been building and maintaining ever since.

necessity
mother of invention
blah

Yea, but have you seen those things? The specs are a joke and a half!
But if your not gaming or editing video, specs aren't really important.

a 200$ computer today has better specs than a 3000$ computer 5 years ago.

Only fools and gamers spend big money on a computer these days.

buy cheap pc. save money for good sound card, speakers, and big monitor.
Maybe a dual monitor video card so you can watch porn on your bigscreen while you surf RIU.

it's always been home built for me.

currently running

3.5ghz Q6600
4gb pc8000 @ 1ghz
ati 4850
dfi DS5 or some sort i have no idea
then an assortment of 6tb of harddrives
24" samsing and a 42" LG

that's kinda my internet and music pc, running win 7 which can be a right PITA with it's "features" which turn into piss annoying gimmicks :P

then for kicking back and smokin some green, i've got a little shuttle SD30G2 with dual core 4gb and some 500gb drives powering a 32" tv and 5.1 for some super mongae

i do like buying lots of expensive tech junk i don't need :d

and yes, desktop RAID is a bit of a scam, certainly there are advantages and it does offer some performance, but not of any real benefit. the only times you want to start looking at things like RAID are if you're looking for security using RAID 0 is it, mirroring your drive for backup and peace of mind, or RAID 1 i think, stripping or whatever it is, which is only truly beneficial for massive I/O heavy duty such as heavily intensive database work etc etc, or at least that's how it was last i read into it :P had a pair of raptor drives in raid 1 and they sucked :D

If you are in Texas or California go to Frys. They may be in other states now?
I bought a refurbished laptop there several years ago and its still running fine.
