Watering? WTF?

I haven't been on this site very long, but I sure have come across alot of warnings to not overwater your plants. I know how harmful it can be, but sheesh, you make a guy afraid to water them at all. "Don't give them anything til their really dry" "Don't give them anything if you can feel any moisture when you stick your finger into the soil" "Make sure those freakin things are dry" From what I've read, it gives a person the impression that they're doomed to die or guaranteed to have major problems if you water them a little too early, or a little too often.:? That's simply not true, unless you really get carried away. Cannabis is a water-loving plant, requiring moisture to thrive.(most strains) And IMO, it's better to keep them a little moist, rather than drying them excessively because you're too worried about overwatering. As long as you're not starving the roots of oxygen, or keeping them soaked to the point of root-rot, they will do great, especially in veg.

On my first grow, I didn't know much at all. I had the cheapest topsoil I could find, with zero perlite or rocks in it for drainage, and watered it once, heavily, every single day throughout the entire grow, and they did awesome, without any issues. I'm not saying that was the right way to do it, because i know it was wrong, and I don't do that anymore. What I am saying, is that all this talk is scaring the new guys out of watering them enough, and likely doing more harm than good. If those roots at the bottom of the pot are dry, then that plant isn't taking in any nutrients or moisture,(at those roots) which is a big no-no. I wonder how many new guys have left them roots dry for a day or two, because they were afraid to overwater? I wouldn't be surprised if that isn't the cause of some of these problems that are difficult to diagnose.

*end rant* :p

Okay now, fight nice.;)

i hear you bro i used to be that way too. i was so worried that i wouldnt water until the big leaves began wilt. haha. my neighbors idea. but i found out you get better results on a watering schedule...... bigger greener....

some new growers get so carried away and water their seedlings 3 or 4 times a day, and when they start drooping, water them even more.

over-watering is one of the most common problems, second only to too little light.

I agree, totally. But, what always seems to fail to be mentioned, is that the plants turn into 'water-processing machines' once they get bigger, especially under intense HID lights(and higher temps). It's really easy to turn that habit into an underwatering habit, after being scared witless about overwatering.

EDIT: Especially the sativa-dominant strains. It's been my experience that those are some 'water-eating' bastards.

which brings me to my question..... i need a soil moisture probe. does anyone know any good brands, that are dependable. ive read a lot about those being cheap and not lasting long. and also thinking about the 3-in-1 with the light meter and the ph options. so if anyone has any help, that would be cool...:leaf:

My buddy had one of those 3-in-1 testers, and it only lasted for maybe 20-25 tests. I imagine that it wasn't real accurate either, but was good to give you a general idea, especially the moisture testing part of it. I mean...'wet', or 'not wet'? How complicated is that?LOL Nah, seriously, I think I'm going to go take a look around right now, and see if I can find one that is 'heavier duty', at a decent price. I'd like to have one too, just to make sure my watering schedule is a-okay.LOL It's always nice to be able to 'measure' things, instead of guessing. It's good to be sure.

I'll be right back, if I find anything that looks up to the task.

Yeah once ya get to where a plant wicks water, it's a beatiful thing

very hard to get new growers to understand that though?

I agree. My main issue, is that some of the um...less intelligent? guys just blurt out "stick you finger all the way into the soil, and if you feel any moisture, wait another day", when one of the new guys ask about watering. Not cool. They never consider the size of the pot that the person is using. If they are using a small pot, especially something 8" or smaller, that's way too dry. Hell, you can stick you finger down at least 2 1/2", and that's at least 25% of the volume of that pot.(which is most likely packed with roots) Add to that, the dry areas around the sides, and at the bottom of the pot, and you have quite a few roots that are dry as hell. Now pound that plant all day with a high powered light, and that plant will be stressing like hell.

I understand that there are a handful of variables, and that it would take a lengthy explanation to really explain it, every time some new guy asks, and it's a pain in the ass to repeat over and over. Hmmm.....Maybe a thread should be created and 'stickied' with a nice thorough explanation, so that anyone asking wouldn't get mislead by the piles of vague responses?

Also...It would be nice for a forum to have threads 'stickied' for each of the main growing basics, so that they would be easy to find(and accurate) for the guys that need to know? Like "basic lighting requirements" "temperature and humidity" "PH" "Soil basics" "Pots and containers", etc.....They wouldn't have to be thorough scientific explanations, but thorough enough so that a person could read them and be confident that they were treating their plants right.
