The following is lifted from another site

theres nuthing wrong at all with growing bag seed.. in fact.,.. i think the term bag seed is sort of a derogatory name..

ive grown many strains that would be classed as "bagseed'..

if youre smoking indoor grown weed.. theres a good chance that strain has self pollinated.. this isnt a bad thing at all.. with no males present.. theres a good chance the seeds will be female.. after all.. this is how seedbanks get their seed.. its no different.. a seed bank will deliberately stress a clone so it spits bananas.. they then painstakingly collect the pollen and pollinate another clone of the same strain.. this is the technique they use.. its a Soma technique for making female seeds.. and it works well.. so well infact that every seedbank that offers feminized seed uses this method...

now the difference with the indoor weed seeding itself.. altho the pollen hasnt been collected and pollinated an unstressed female.. its still very viable seed.. and ive used this technique for about 20 years.. and ive found absolutely NO problem with it..
some say by using this seed youre cementing the hermie gene into the strain.. this is BS.. its already there.. thats how the seed was produced in the first place.. some say.. yeah but the seeds will be predominately hermie.. thats BS too.. as most of the seeds ive given out and grown have been female.. sure you get males and hermies too.. but you also get that from seeds made with a male and female..

theres so much speculation about the genes being weakened and youll only get hermies.. but seriously.. in 20 years of doing this.. i havent seen it..

i think a lot of it is hype brought on by seedbanks to get you buy seeds rather than make them yourself.. if people really knew how easy it was to make seeds.. then the seed banks wouldnt making as much money would they..

for years ive gotten strains as clones.. and cloned it to death until its spat seeds.. ive then grown these seeds out to find a fresh female and started again.. ive done this with so many strains its not funny..

so to.. answer your question.. bagseed.. or bought seed... well to me.. if that seed has been pollinated indoors.. from a self seeding female clone.. then you got exactly the same genetics as the bud it came from.. to me.. this seed.. and a bought seed.. theres no difference.. oh.. except ones free.. the other isnt...

It's very possible to grow good weed with bagseed - after all, just because someone doesn't know the name of the strain in the bag, doesn't mean it doesn't have a strain. It's even better for your first grow or two, so you aren't paying good money on something you'll take out your "growing pains" on. However - after that, you may want to consider paying for seeds. You do have an increased risk of hermies from bagseed, as well as having no clue what you're growing. Personally, my first two grows were bagseed. The weed was killer, yeah - but out of the first grow, 2/3 was male, and second grow, out of 20, 15 were males, 3 serious hermies, and the last two hermie, but female enough to flower. I'll never grow anything but feminized seedbank seeds again - I feel anything else, for me, is a waste of time and resources.

one of the first things anyone learns is to take the males out, it amazes me how much bag seed there is around considering most people take the males out,

I wonder where all the pollen comes from if people take the males out.

And femeized!? well gee thats a whole other thread, ethical breeding blah..
Im anti-fem btw..but each to they own.

Don't worry, everyone knows you can breed your own seeds, but if people cared enough about that they would, but people like variety too much and its far easier and quicker to take 100 cuttings than to produce 100 seeds, if you want to keep a strain so that isn't really an issue either.

I don't doubt that you can get some top notch weed out of bagseed and your going to get mostly females in bagseed and a handful of hermies.

You could get tall plants you could get small plants, bag seed is such a lucky dip and for the sake of $20, for some of the cheaper seeds, you get to pick what kind of bud you want, how big the plants will be, sativa/indica, how many weeks it will take to finish.

the price of 20$ doesn't' seem that bad for the benefits

While you can get good seeds from a bag, it is a gamble. As much money and work as I invest in a grow, I don't want to skimp on essential inputs. I consider good seeds and good nutes the best investments you can make. I use only fem seeds from attitude.

Not trying to put down bagseed (I have grown some pretty nice smoke from bagseed) but you never know what you're gonna get. My last baseed grow was 50% hermies! The bud turned out o.k. but it was full of seeds. On the other hand, buying seeds for those living in the u.s. and especially non-medical states can be an ordeal. My best advice is if you are just starting out and want to get your feet wet, give bagseed a go. If you decide growing is something you want to pursue then get some good beens from a reputable breeder. You are almost guaranteed that you are gonna grow some dank ass plants and the chance of hermies is pretty low. Just my .02.:weed:

I luckily hit 4 female plants out of 7 seeds in my bagseed stash. Got about 200+ seeds left to try. Nothing wrong with bagseeds!

the seedbanks that sell cheapo genetics are just as much as a lucky dip as bag seed imo, how many grow journals have i seen where ppl thought they were getting fast finishing indica seeds and got a mixed bag of 12 week sativa phenos..

Last few times I bought a bag, there were no seeds. If I ever bought some extra-ordinary bag of weed, and found a few seeds, I wouldn't hesitate to plant them.

Since I only can grow one plant at a time, I want the very best genetics, so I buy the best seeds. Plus, I am very interested in experimenting with indicas, sativas and hybrids to see which I like better. My guess is, I'll love them all. Someday I'll have a gun safe full of jars from 20 different strains to choose from.

Ever see the show "Hoarders?" When I'm an old man, they will come into my house with the camera crew, and find bags and jars and bongs stacked to the ceiling. 10 freezers full of moldy 40 year old weed. Of course, if the cops find it, they will never believe its my "personal stash."

RE: Bag Seed, it's like Forrest Gump's Mama's box of chocolates; "You never know what you're going to get".
I had a Thai SS go hermie, and a little bit of it's pollen got loose before I caught it. It's neighbor, a Super Skunk, has produced 14 very nice fat, brown seeds. Since there has been no true male involved, these should all pop female: SS X Thai SS.
When I started growing a while back, it was ALL bag seed. Couldn't believe my eyes when I saw my first Dutch seed catalogue in 1988, (way pre -internet). Cannabis cultivation has come an incredibly long way in the last 40 years. I feel fortunate that there are accessible seed banks around to feed my "gourmet" tastes.
This would not be done with bagseed.
I wish you all, Good luck & good grow........bongsmilie

bagseed for ur first/learning/experimantal/learning how to clone/lst/top/ etc.
store bought seed for when u've got ur technique down and want to grow some shit that killed elvis! see i started out last year w/ the few and the proud bagseed i had stashed back from the previous year. this year i'll order mine and grow either the shit that killed him or the shit that made him get the perpetual munchies (as evidenced by his wt. gain) up until his death.
