greetings all

i'm a beginner here on my second grow, first grow went pretty well using 2x 250 w MH lamps for vegging and 2x 400 w HPS for flowering and this grow was during my winter. I have started a second grow now in the summer and unfortunately the plants seemed to suffer with the MH lamps and the high temps as i couldnt seem to get the temps below 31 degrees or 91 farenheit, so i switched over to these sylvania 4 foot 36 w gro-lux tubes x 4 of those and the plants seem to be doing better with the temps around 27 degrees celsius or 80 farenheit.....But now i read that daylight flourescents are better so i bought 4x 4 foot 36 w cool daylight tubes with 3250 LM each, they are the osram 860 cool daylight tubes and they seem to be giving off more light than the gro-lux tubes which emit a kind of purple light..... Anyway i'm not sure what different kinds of daylight tubes are out there so my question is has anyone had good results with the cool daylight tubes or would you recommend i stick to the sylvania gro-lux tubes? some advice here would be much appreciated..

greetings

i would get vented hoods and go back to the hid lights. your yield will suffer. light airy buds and no hard nuggs without proper light imo. good luck bro!

invest in a portable AC/dehumidifier/with built in timer, about $450 USD, would solve the heat issue.

in my veg room i use 3 warm and one cool. seems to work great. I'd stay away from fluoro grow lights though, they dont have the spectrum for flowering that our plants need.

and yeah, figure out a way to exhaust your heat or build some cool tubes for them or something

thanks for the replies guys, i plan on veggin for about 2 months hopefully then the outside temps will have come down a little. for now i need to stick with the flourescents because even with 3 fans blowing in the room and leaving the door open the temps just dont seem to want to go down with the MH lamps... Perhaps if i use the flouresents mostly then introduce my babies to them for about an hour the first day or two then gradually leave them under the MH longer each day that might toughen them up a bit i dunno.... dam wish it was winter already

"invest in a portable AC/dehumidifier/with built in timer, about $450 USD, would solve the heat issue. " .....yeah i thought about this but the cheapest ones where l live seem to be going for around $600 and i dont really want to spend that.

still if anyone has had any good results with these osram 860 cool daylight flourescents let me know how it went please. I have read post where the guys use these daylight flourescents measured in kelvins with the bestones at around 6500K but i can't seem to find these daylight flourescents anywhere where i stay the only one i can find is this osram 860 cool daylight tube which is measured at 3250 LM so i have no idea what the kelvins are on these things...arrrg

how many tubes do you have all togeather in your veg room then if you use 3 warm to one cool? and are they 4,5,6,7,8 feet long? and watts?

EDIT - went downstairs to see what brand of bulbs they are and i forgot i switched out 2 of the cools for warms (so it matched my momma/clone area). They're Sylvania 32w T-8 and i think the code is 850 but it was hard to read

I have 2 4x4' fixtures covering 8 plants. i made the fixtures by mounting 2 2x4' fixtures together (bought entire set-up from wallyworld for like $60)

i'm going to be steppin up to T-5 soon, gonna buy an 8x4' fixture, should cost me about $300 total and will be 4-5 times the light output.

My momma/clone area is basically the same as Mr' Greens (as made popular by the hit movie I Grow Cronic) With 3 2x4' with a warm and cool in each. (best set-up ever imo)

the best thing for you to do right now is maybe alternate your lights have one on for 2-3 hours then the other. the plants will be fine and you'll cut your heat (and electric bill) in half

A note about fluorescent tubes. The kelvin temperature of the tube is often coded into the model of the tube. Usually the 2nd and 3rd digit x 100. In your case the Osram 860 has a kelvin rating of 6000k. The '60' in 860 designates this. This has a similar appearance to the 6500k when viewed by human eyes.

that does sound good i think i'll copy that setup he-he....

well its been just about 3 days now under the osram 860 cool daylight tubes and i must say my one white rhino and one freebie from 420 seeds is doing pretty good and the new growth looks healthy too. Those two plants are about 3 weeks old maybe 4 and growing very nicely, another 2 white rhinos and 2 AK-47 just sprouted above the soil on friday and have been mostly under the cool daylight tubes and starting their second set of leaves now and also seem happy.I'll wait for the new seedlings to get to their 4th set of true leaves then slowly introduce them to the MH lamp i reckon.

Burninjay thanks for the info thats just what i was looking, much appreciated. I was told that when using daylight flourescent tubes a minimum kelvin rating of 6500 was recommended but i guess a kelvin rating of 6000 will have to do for now.
