On the point about the calyx swelling on the oldest calyx's - this is normal, the first flowers that formed have come to the end of their ability to produce seed and so swell and the once white but now red hairs receed back into the calyx a bit or drop off. This is the start of the ripening period of your bud and the next newest flowers to form will start to swell and then the ones formed after that and the ones after that and so on. What you see is calyx's swelling and new flowers being made, when the ratio of calyx's swollen is very high and the new flowers are very scarce then i consider harvesting.
I would never harvest my bud till most of the calyx's swell, people say it can be judged by the percentage of red hairs but you will get red hairs from an early stage, wait for the calyx's to swell and the red hairs to go tatty and pull back into the calyx's, this is the type of red hairs they mean by which to judge ripeness.
I only grow white widow and only seeds i obtained from dutch passion about four years ago, these seeds were reputed to be the best, original and most stable white widow strain going with pure white widow genetics. Blows other weed away, problem is it is a bit too strong, am left dribbiling down myself slumped in a chair. It is 75percent indica and 25percent sativa. Apparently these seeds are legendary. I don't believe the hype but the best seeds you could buy at the time. White widow rocks! It can be a bit leafy but hell the leaves are just as good as the bud and just as white. The guy obviously never smoked any quality white widow, the shit scares me when i smoke it!!
