Dense Nugs

This was an discussion from post #5, Sorry, I didnt even see that it was in the CLF forum. I just use NEW POSTS button.
I will refrain from trying to teach people with CLF. As I would only use them for clones.
Ez,

are you the end all of growing pot? who the hell are you to teach anyone?
CFL HPS MH . . . WHATEVER! they all grow pot. dense nugs come form the skill of the grower. stop being a doofus. :dunce:

I used to grow with nothing but cfls
i was always happy with my buds
as far as being nice and dense.
I'm no expert, nor do i have a major
grow op. I started growing for one reason
so i never had to deal with buying weed again.
That being said, it seemed like i always
had to buy weed between harvests.
My cfl grown plants never had the overall
weight to get me from harvest to harvest.
As i said, my op is very small. For a lot of
reasons, i only flower 2 plants at any one
time under T5s and 42w cfls. I'd get decent grows,
but nothing over 2oz/plant.
More like 2-2.5oz between 2 plants.
I decided to try to go perpetual.
I figured the fastest way to get there was to flower with hps.
I still veg with T5/cfls but i set up a new flower room
with a 250w hps to flower under.
That one change, albeit a big change
took me from 2-2.5oz per grow, to anywhere
from 5-7oz per grow.
This is in no way a knock on cfls, as i still use them for veg,
and thinking of using a few in flowering.
I'm sure with a few changes, i could of
gotten better weight results with cfls, but with hps, basically,
if you've got a few cfl grows under
your belt, and have an idea of what you're
doing, without much trouble, you can
really increase your yields.
Density also will never again be an issue for me.
Peace

I bought a used MH 250w hood, ballast and bulb for $80. I would do that if I were you.

edit- I too clicked on the "new post" icon. Didn't realize it was in the CFL section. You'll get better nugs with more power and better bulbs. :)

I've been smoking Northern California and Oregon grown pot for over 15 years. I think I know what a dense nug is. :)

Not everyone wants to be a commercial grower and many cfl users already plan on moving to hps at some point. I know I'm planning on getting a 400w hps for my 9'sq. area in the near future. But, how does that help me, the OP, or any other cfl user get more dense nugs with cfls today?

Personally, and on topic, I'm having good luck with the setup on my white widow. Just 78w total of 2700k but all of the bulbs are within 3" at any given time, which is what I've observed from successful cfl growers. If it wasn't my first time flowering a plant I'm positive my yeild would be at least double. I messed up with watering and feeding and it flowered accidentally after a power outage. Even then though, my immature buds are hard, sticky, and stinky.

And since he asked about "nutrients or tips", this is what else I'm doing with it. It's in a 16oz. cup with ocean forest soil double potted into a half gallon of MG seed starting mix (5-1-5). I should have just transplanted but I waited too long which is just another newbie mistake. I water when the pot is light and am using Botanicare Hydroplex at 3ml per gallon along with EarthJuice MicroBlast once every two weeks. I just gave her her last feeding today and it's spring water with unsulphured blackstrap until haravest. The buds already have nice bag appeal and I'm looking forward to smoking them next month. I may get a dry 1/4oz. off of a 10" tall plant. It was 14" before I supercropped it and it hasn't grown at all since it flowered. I'd consider that decent.

Here are some pics at four weeks. The messed up leaves are from a cat chomping them.

to all of those who aimed at answering my question and not telling me what i should be doing instead...i thank you. i'm on a budget and i know i'm breaking all the rules (MG soil, aluminum foil lined walls, cfls, and floro tubes). i also know that its still realistic to get something nice out of it if done right. i can't use hps or mh for several reasons not including cost. don't get me wrong, someday i'd like to have a much nicer set up but this is what i'm working with. if any of you CFL advocates would like to see some pictures i'm gonna get em up soon. because i'm a cheap ass - as is evident - i haven't gotten around to buying batteries for my camera. it's on the to do list

You cannot overlook genetics. While I've come to believe that both hps and cfl growers can obtain great results,Genetics is the other half of the coin. Some strains simply will not produce dense buds no matter what lights you throw at it.

I was hoping someone would bring that up. :bigjoint:

Well guys, I finally got some batteries for the digital. Here they are....the first picture just shows my whole set up. It's jank as fuck but I'm getting pretty nice results. They are about 5 weeks into veg right now. The third picture is a plant that I experimented with FIMming. Don't think I really did it correctly (the first new growth thereafter produced some deformed leaves) but there is a whole lot of crazy growth and new nodes forming since that point. I'm excited to see the yield. The last picture is my beauty. REALLY hope its female. These are all unknown strains since I just used seeds I have randomly saved over the year. All from quality bags of course!

So...how much longer to flower ya think? Any suggestions/questions? Let me know whatcha think

I've always read to flower when they're about a third to half as high as you want your plants to be at harvest.

what about the stalks? will they thicken up much during flower? i do have a height constraint to work with but i need to make sure my babies can handle the weight of the buds
