First, you should NEVER have your plants where someone can see them. If you are growing in your garage (especially if you leave the door open), they should be in a stealthy cabinet.
Second, if you CAN get a mmj card, get it. You may never need it, but if you do, you'll have it.
And finally, if the plants were where they could be seen, they probably were. Unless you can get a mmj card now, get rid of the plants...and all your stash, paraphenalia, etc. That is the consequences of someone finding your plants. He may not tell the cops, but he might tell a co-worker, who will tell his wife, who will tell her friend, who will tell her neighbor, etc..
