in inches what is the optimal distance of 400 watt hps?
hey bro it all takes place in the hoodmine is at 10in and no prob.i'm not even cooling the light it has 8" hole on each side.Light works like this it is mearsured at 12" from canopy 50,000 lumens and the farther away it gos it loses lumens by half like 18" 25,000 lumens at top of canopy. Now if ur plant is 3 feet tall the light is 4ft from base of plant if my math is right about 12,500 lumens.so the closer u get the light the better off u are.If i cooled my light could get it about 6in away and that means now the lumens are 100,000 lumens at the top of my canopy and thats basicly how light works.good luck bro!!HOPE THIS HELPS!

I use the back of my hand as a reference. If it's hot on my hand i raise it. Warm is good. Hot is not. it's at between 12" and 16" from my canopy right now. I keep an oscillating fan blowing across my canopy at all times to dissipate the heat produced from my 400 watt HPS bulb. An old school indoor grower gave me this tip and i'v used it since. It works great for me. Good luck

Thank you for that, ima do that on my setup for my ak47 grow I will be starting soon. First time hps grow. I only have cfl hydro under my belt. This time all organic all autoflower. Its in a 14x10 room and I wont have the cooling with tubing. I ll have the room temp @ 70-75 so hopefully with the fan oscillating on the light it will keep it cool enough to keep 12-16 inches away.

I'd worry about bleaching with a 1000w, not a 400w. Not enough intensity to do that.

If you run it close it can bleach them. I was running mine at 12"(and a little closer)and had some bleaching, on more than one run. Then i bought a light meter and was surprised to find that the output was over 7,000 lumens at that distance. Those 400 watt lights have some serious output up close, they just lose their intensity alot faster, over distance.

I've found(and measured) 15-18" is about perfect for a 400 watt HPS.

If you've only grown under CFL's you are going to be blown away by the difference in every aspect of the grow with a 400 watt system. It would make a huge difference if you could veg under 400 watt MH then go to 400 watt HPS for flowering. Have you already purchased a HID setup yet?

7000 lumens is low... the idea is to have a minimum of 10,000 lumens for optimal growing. Maybe you meant 70,000?

Also, the better the air flow the closer you can get you plants to the light. When I had my 400w light I got it to almost 6", but then again I didn't have a very good reflector.

unless your running co2 10,000 is overkill.... a 400w 10 -16 inches no less than 8 . you need to keep an ocilating fan blowing accros the tops of the plants and all will be well........ keep your eyes open a lot of misinformation on the forum latley get many replies and before making a move

Great tip, and it does wonders for building up the stem and branches :-P

No, I read in Jorges Cervantes Marijuana Bible that 10,000 lumens is the MINIMUM for optimal growth in the flowering stage (maybe you're thinking about the vegetative stage?)

Did you know a 1000w puts out over 160,000 lumens?

I don't mean to get into a thing about this... just google it... you're a little off. I've been reading about this for a couple of days.

Maybe you're thinking of lumens per square foot?
