CAN'T BELIEVE no one had started a thread on the state of the union address! thought ppl would definitely have some opinions on it. whats everyone think the "spending freeze" is going to mean to us? and “All other discretionary government programs” will be affected, Obama said, encompassing education, agriculture, law enforcement and thousands of other government programs (excerpt from msn) sounds like the wells bout to run dry! but on who? us? anyway, just thought i'd stir up a little.......................conversation bout the speech and get opinion.

Spending freeze amounts to 2.5% of the budget, it will take 100 years of freezes to pay the US citizen back for all the money we were forced to spend.

He's a great speaker, but I thought he took the situation far too lightly. I thought the current state of the Union was bad enough off that we needed serious reform, not wise cracks, poking fun at the Repubs and barely scolding the bankers.

So Joe Biden is gonna head up a task force to study unemployment eh? wow im sure that will help tons.

Political posturing for the most part. I did hear things i liked, but we will see if any of it actually happens or if its just going to be like his election campaign, promises promises promises and non delivery of anything. He is still bent on health care reform and I think some of his ideas about opening state lines to insurance purchases and eliminating frivolous malpractice suits are great ideas, lets see if anything happens though. I do not want Govt running health care, guaranteed disaster IMO.

We all know what his promises mean now. Nothing new was said, and no real change. No hope any longer that he will improve.
It struck me as pure political calculation about how to remain relevant while not changing his ideals and goals. This flawed, government-centric ideology is what is killing the American spirit right now. Every time he speaks, we either learn more details that we don't like, or are reminded of failed promises. Why continue down the same path when logic and popular sentiment resist it ?

Also, that "spending freeze" is just making it look like something is being done. No, it's more interesting than that .. it's a way to fix in place all the spending increases from the last year.

Bank guy - six figures = evil , tax them
Government guy - six figures = good, give them another raise.

I'm glad we have such intelligent people to let us know who is good and bad. I wouldn't be able to figure this out otherwise.
What would happen if government weren't there to keep all the bad capitalists away ?
We owe our great politicians and government our debt and praise, and they can tax all they want .. it's my civil duty to make sure everyone ( that they have determined is worthy ) has a "seat at the table". On second thought, :finger: arrogant government pricks.

My vote for Barack Obama was the first I'd ever cast and I haven't regretted it for a second.

I loved our President's speech AND his promises. It's so easy for every one to bitch and moan about broke promises he's made. He flat out asked for help from Americans (that means US!)! He wants to work for the American people. How can single person tackle an entire nation's deep rooted issues without support? How can a single person know what we want if we don't tell him?

I am a 24 year old college student with a 4.0 GPA. I was laid off in August right as I was going back to school. Yes, I could work at some shitty restaurant waiting tables..but I'm not because I want to be able to devote the time I need to studying to make a better life for myself. So, yes..I live off of unemployment. The unemployment extension is allowing me to continue my education and get the most out of it. This year the increased education credit/tax break that I am getting will be going directly to paying down credit card debt, which will in turn help me with a fresh start once I finish school. I fully support educational tax breaks. I am living proof of the good they are doing for many hard-working students.

I also rent a room in a home that was purchased with help from the economic stimulus. There are very few places in my area that I could afford to live in. I am very fortunate that my roommate was able to get the help she needed. If it weren't for the government aid, I would more than likely be on the street. Instead I am living in a home where the owner is using this opportunity to fix this house to build equity which in turn increases the value of the neighborhood.

The things our President has set in motion ARE working. Meaningful change is never easy and never quick. Often times the choices and sacrifices that need to be made to create momentum in the right direction aren't the most popular.

I support our President and I plan on letting him, the rest of the government, and people in my life know how I feel about the issues that matter most to me. I encourage everyone to do the same, whether they agree or disagree. We live in a democracy...make yourself heard!

1. more money for everyone
2. no-one has to pay it back
3. let's cut spending

An insult to all of america that we could possibly be stupid enough to buy that. :spew:

That was quite a performance last night.
Obama now wants to double down on his most misguided policies.
Yikes, he has NO clue.
He inhabits a dreamworld of his own construct...disconnected, aloof, arrogant and defiant!
He will surely burnish GWBs legacy, and make Jimmy Carter look good in comparison.
A disaster in the making.

Good point Man. With jobs leaving the country in droves and govt. jobs being created at a fever pitch, how long will it be before our topheavy house of cards topples? Think about it. Govt. is supposed to be here to serve us. What happens when all the private sector jobs are gone and all that remains is govt. jobs? Can govt. exist simply for the sake of itself? I think not. :weed:

this isnt a bash on you, just some food for thought.

so obama took money from a hard working american and gave it to your landlord to fix the house....maybe that hard working american was your former boss? maybe your former boss can no longer afford to hire for his business because govt is choking every last penny out of him and giving it to your roomate so she isnt on the street too?

mutiply your situation by 120 million (working people in the coutry).

no offense to you or your roomate. i appreciate that you are going to school to improve your curcimstance. but in reality, you or your roomate are NOT productive (right now anyway) and your govt is taking money from people who ARE productive and giving it to people who are NOT. can you see where this all ends up?

you are young and energetic. best of luck to you and your roomate but there are better ways to ensure you get the education you desire.

"shitty restaurant"...

Why not work at that "shitty restaurant", helping the owner improve it so that it builds equity which in turn increases the value of the neighborhood?

Oh yeah, because it's below you.

Obama voters will drag us all down with them, if we let them...:???:

I find it funny that throughout this whole healthcare fiasco America has opposed his healthcare reforms. We saw this manifest itself last week in Massachusetts. PEOPLE DON'T LIKE YOUR REFORMS. Despite this blatantly obvious fact, Obama is still ignoring the American people and attempting to shove these reforms down our throat. Everyone acknowledges that healthcare needs to be fixed, but everyone also acknowledges that it should not be put into the hands of the federal government.
Pelosi also needs to burn in hell -
"Madam Speaker, where in the constitution does it allow our government to force American's to pay for health insurance?"
- "You're kidding me, right?"

Good Job Madam Speaker and Mr. President!

Don't forget that he is freezing parts of the govt. that have had record increases for three years.

It's a political move because he fears the next Congress will pull back on those, and THAT'S why he is freezing the INCREASES.

Don't be fooled....

Its gonna be another year before the freezes even take place, that gives plenty of time for some new terrible episode to happen so they won't have to freeze it. Stimulus 3?

They aren't calling it a stimulus though. It's a "Jobs Bill".

i think its great you could work at a shitty restaurant (like the one i work at) but dont because you would RATHER collect unemployment (something i have never done), then you are going to pay off credit card debt(that i never had) with money paid out for education .now me ( at the shitty restaurant)cant get a free education (because i make to much money?)after losing my house to one of those illegal home loans and reducing my decent life that i built from nothing back to where it came from (nothing ).
i work hard for what i had , now i have to start all over and cant get any help because i help myself and guys like this choose the FREE MONEY option .

sorry about the little rant but i too would like to better my life by way of a better education but cant because i (aswell as the 120mil workforce )are working (at the shitty restaurant)to support the rest of the U.S. oh by the way my wife gets this whole free education bit because her job went overseas and she still is working for money at a job NOT free money.
