My vote for Barack Obama was the first I'd ever cast and I haven't regretted it for a second.
I loved our President's speech AND his promises. It's so easy for every one to bitch and moan about broke promises he's made. He flat out asked for help from Americans (that means US!)! He wants to work for the American people. How can single person tackle an entire nation's deep rooted issues without support? How can a single person know what we want if we don't tell him?
I am a 24 year old college student with a 4.0 GPA. I was laid off in August right as I was going back to school. Yes, I could work at some shitty restaurant waiting tables..but I'm not because I want to be able to devote the time I need to studying to make a better life for myself. So, yes..I live off of unemployment. The unemployment extension is allowing me to continue my education and get the most out of it. This year the increased education credit/tax break that I am getting will be going directly to paying down credit card debt, which will in turn help me with a fresh start once I finish school. I fully support educational tax breaks. I am living proof of the good they are doing for many hard-working students.
I also rent a room in a home that was purchased with help from the economic stimulus. There are very few places in my area that I could afford to live in. I am very fortunate that my roommate was able to get the help she needed. If it weren't for the government aid, I would more than likely be on the street. Instead I am living in a home where the owner is using this opportunity to fix this house to build equity which in turn increases the value of the neighborhood.
The things our President has set in motion ARE working. Meaningful change is never easy and never quick. Often times the choices and sacrifices that need to be made to create momentum in the right direction aren't the most popular.
I support our President and I plan on letting him, the rest of the government, and people in my life know how I feel about the issues that matter most to me. I encourage everyone to do the same, whether they agree or disagree. We live in a democracy...make yourself heard!
Here is a slightly different story.
My sister who is now in her late 50s had a very high grade point average in high school. She worked at lots of jobs while in high school and summers during college, quite a few of them were even shitty restaurants. She went to an Ivy league school, not my cup of tea, but it was a goal of hers that her hard work helped her meet.
My brother worked while supporting a wife and several young kids and later went to college and did achieve a 4.0 as both an undergrad and a graduate student. He didn't work at a shitty restaurant, but he did work in a hospital kitchen as a dish washer, which is shitty work. He now is well off financially,
having met his goals.
Me? I worked in a shitty restaurant as a kid and left home very early. I started an undergrad degree while working fulltime in a factory, (yes there used to be factories in the USA) partying with my buddies and supporting myself.
I later went on to a professional career and pursued graduate studies while managing a company until I started my own business and began to leverage Real Estate. I didn't achieve a 4.0 as an undergrad, it wasn't a goal and would have been difficult to do since I had to devote some of my time figuring out how to pay my rent and eating while getting young ladies to get naked with me. Now, many years later I live a very basic life off the grid, asking for nothing but to be left alone and peacefully co-exist. My goals have been met.
My other sister left home early, got married and had kids. She has worked at several shitty restaurants over the years to help her husband provide for themselves and their children. They have a nice house and work several jobs to maintain it.
What do I have in common with my siblings? We all worked and didn't ask or expect others to pay our way.
Shitty restaurants and washing dishes helped each of us pull ourselves out of a low income childhood and get what we wanted out of life.
Shitty restaurants are good for people to experience. You should try it and
stop expecting others to pay your way.
People that own, work and eat at shitty restaurants have taxes forcibly taken so people like you can benefit. You might consider thanking them.
