Hurricane glass

Does anyone know if hurricane glass (the kind sold at michaels) will block any beneficial light? I'm going to be using a ceramic metal halide bulb that has a 5 inch diameter so the bake-a-round is out. I'm definitely going to need a cool tube and I'm not spending 200 to buy one.
I was even thinking of attaching a CPU cooling block to a 45w peltier plate with a recirculating pump going through an old heater core installed inline with the cool tube..if anyone has any ideas in either I would love the input.

I would not assume that the shade will block any usable light (with the exception of UV light, and that is definitely not a certainty). Different types of glass have different levels of light transmission, as well as different properties concerning heat. I would make a bet that the glass is not tempered, and also not borosilicate, or "hard" glass, also known as Pyrex, so you will more than likely need a higher-flowing fan to compensate for the heat transmission. If you need a good source of a shade to fit, I would look at the link below.

That vase looks like "Tits", but $32. seems a little high! Might be worth it! Seems like I've seen them around, cheaper, not sure of exact size or cost - just sayin'.

As I understand it, "glass" does block some light - but the amount is insignificant compared to the "Closeness Benefit" you can achieve with a "CoolTube". Not even a problem!

I have no idea the quality of the vase, but since the OP seems to be looking for a larger than 5" tube, it was the cheapest that I could find with a quick online search. Agreed, though, about the light transmission. The disadvantages provided by the blocked light are far outweighed by the benefits of having the ability to get your plants close without burning or bleaching.

Thanks for the input..I saw a vase real similar at michaels for like 8 bucks..they also had the ones with the bulge in the middle for around the same price.
