Global Warming on trial...

Global warming on trialSixth-graders decide that humans aren’t to blame By Ben Ready The Daily Times-Call LONGMONT — Humans don’t cause global warming, a jury of sixth graders at Trail Ridge Middle School concluded Thursday after hearing opposing arguments from their peers.“They’re pretty young for this kind of thinking. They did great,” paleontology teacher Ken Poppe said after the 40-minute “trial” in his classroom. With Earth’s warming accepted as a tenet, pre-teen “lawyers” and “scientists” debated whether humans have caused it.Eleven jurors listened intently as prosecutors and defendants flashed contradictory graphs tracking global temperatures, carbon dioxide levels, polar ice cap statistics, volcanic activity and sea surface temperatures — all of which were found Wednesday in the school’s computer lab. “The earth has warmed and cooled over many years. If it’s caused by CO2, why haven’t the charts shot up?” Poppe’s son and lead prosecutor Caleb argued during a rebuttal. In a climax that sent half the class to its feet and forced the judge to call for order, opponent Monique Nem slapped a contradictory graph onto the prosecution’s table.“We’ve proven you wrong! The CO2 levels have shot up,” she said. The jury responded more warmly, however, to Caleb Poppe’s response: The graphic cited a Hawaiian source; Hawaii has volcanoes; volcanoes emit CO2.In closing arguments, Alexia Hegy said global temperatures actually decreased in the 1960’s, while the global population rose. Humans cannot be at fault, she concluded. With the final word, defense attorney Sarah Steed countered: “It all comes back to us, the people — not the sun, not the weather. We need to turn off lights when we don’t need them. Bikes can work. The environment can be richer.”Seven of 11 jurors decided humans are not to blame, but everyone agreed classroom debates make for fun learning.“It was a hard decision, because both sides made good points,” said student Samantha Roberts.Ken Poppe said he let students choose which side of the debate to argue. Poppe personally believes global warming is cyclical and not affected by humans, while his Colorado State University student aide David Richards believes the opposite. Both, however, said they presented both sides equally to the students leading up to Thursday’s debate.“What I think is not the issue. It’s what the students dig up and how they present the case,” Poppe said.Only one parent questioned Poppe’s decision to hold a global warming debate. That mother expected him to present Al Gore’s global warming movie “An Inconvenient Truth” as indisputable facts, Poppe said. After he explained his neutrality in the classroom, the mom allowed her child to participate in the debate, he said.“You don’t understand someone’s position until you can argue it to their satisfaction,” Poppe said, quoting a famous physicist. “I don’t believe in Darwinism either, but I can argue it as well as any Darwinist.”

It seems to me that the vast majority of those who don't believe in global warming discount evolution, too; that's sad.

Hey Indie have not seen ya in a while!

We have flogged this topic up and down and all around here at RIU...
IMO global warming is not only a farce, it is a scam of the greatest magnitude!!!
Al Gore has recently stated that it is ok to exaggerate the dangers in order to motivate people to act.
This guy is absolutely out of control!:blsmoke:

if global warming is a farce or not, evolution certainly isn't.
may i have one piece of evidence to support this claim?

i'll save you the bother, there isn't any. don't waste your time. despite years of brainwashing to the contrary - evolution is still JUST a theory... no proof. no facts. nothing.

what makes me laugh about this whole thing, still, is that we're just a tiny planet with a thin trace of an atmosphere orbiting a massive, out of control nuclear fusion reaction. despite this, we have the wherewithal to think we can mitigate temperature swings and climate change... it's beyond absurd.

What is really absurd is to hold to such an idiotic idea that man has no influence on global warming. Those "great" thinkers must also hold with the Rapture philosophy and expect they will be swept up to la-la land before humans complety turn this planet into one huge trash heap with mean temps around 500 degrees. When I hear the arguement that humans have no influence on global warming, I fell like I've just been accosted by retards. Drink up, the "rapture" is coming, so why try and fix the earth anyway, Idiots.

hi there, med! i guess you still hate Christians, so much for the translation of the "Season" over to you non-believers.

i'm sure we do affect the climate to some extent, especially those who still have a 4 barrel carb dumping gas into your v8 engines.

drink up!

amen... I couldn't have said it better myself.
On top of that, I'd be the first to note how incredibly small and insignificant we are even as a species as a whole, however to deny the fact that human consumption has lead to a global rise of co2 levels is not only ignorant, it's careless. When most power plants around the world are run with fossil fuels that pump co2 into the atmosphere driving our cars everyday that burn gasoline pumping more and more co2 in the air. This planet is a greenhouse...
anyone on riu have a greenhouse?
this shit won't go anywhere all our garbage, everything we toss into the atmosphere stays here. it's not going anywhere. there is no magic exhaust fairy coming to collect our shit. meanwhile the only oxygen resources on this planet are being destroyed on a daily basis as we harvest material to build houses for more assholes who don't give a shit that we're turning this planet into a cosmic waste basket.

then again, it might just be nature.

fuck it.

Never said I hate Christians, just the dumbass ones that figure we are not going to be here long so fuck it, waste all and fuck the environment. Maybe you've missed my many rants about how Christians should act more like Jesus and stop judging the rest of mankind, remember, Judge not lest................ Anyway I am of the christian persuasion my self, I don't go around bragging about it or trumpeting bullshit to influence others, I leave that to preachers. They are mostly full of themselves, not God. How many preachers actually live like Jesus, Funny, I can't think of any, Mansions, private planes. Limos, $1,000 suits, yeah Jesus would be proud. Go on and live in your little defined world and fuck everyone else, that seems to be your agenda. My theory: If God created us in his likeness, we are all saved as Jesus didn't differentiate when he came to save the world, Love one another and take care of the Mother, EARTH. You idiots that believe you are going to float up into the sky should look a little closer. there is nothing but unhabitable space for billions of miles. That rapture bullshit is made up for little kids, Drink.

sounds like definite anger, if not hate. well, i agree about the televangelist crowd... a bunch of crooks and robbers, imo. the best place i've ever been to church is alone on top of a mountain in N.C. at about -5f in January, i don't know how many miles from civilization, with just my pack and the horizon. that's where i confronted just how tiny we are and how significant it is that we even matter at all.

i don't know any Christian who doesn't believe in an eventual Rapture of some sort. so, what do you make of all the ancient prophesies that seem to be lining up with current events. the creation of Israel in one day without a war. the move toward global government, cashless society. the constant wars and war loving people running rampant killing and destroying all that they can. what about the fact that so many people are blind to the culture of death, secrets and deception we live in? do you not think God will tire of all these shenanigans and hand out some old-skool wrath? i mean, think about it... you're God. you send your Son and he suffers tremendously then dies a shameful death for all of humanity. his hand picked followers spread the word about his deeds and the miracles they saw first hand but people start to drift away. they forget and start to think maybe it's just a "fairy tale", maybe he was just a neat "spiritual leader". today, you've got money loving pigs rolling all over the city you gave your people several thousand years ago, they're pretending to be worshiping you while they conceal many facts about your Son's life from their followers... you see courts being judged by women (something you said not to do), you see openly immoral sexual perverts running the governments. seriously, if you were God, and if we really were created in His image, wouldn't you be getting near the end of your rope? even Jesus put a finite limit on the number of times we should forgive those who tread on us... ("not seven times but seventy times seven")
