imagine a 50 gallon drum, or a garbage can. with a big ass air pump and a huge airstone or maybe multiple airstones, but outdoors? would that be out of control or what? has this been done before?

You'd have to change the water and the cost of nutes would be high. Plus the roots would be exposed to wide variations in the water temp since they are not protected in the ground. I don't see any advantage that would offset that.

what if he buried the tank, and stuck to local organic nutes ( banana peels/ egg shells n shit) or used little to none
You could bury the tank and use the ground for an insullator. That would handle the temps. But then you'd have to change the water out of a rez that's burind in the ground. You could bury it in a hill side and run a drain tube out the side of the bottom of the tank with a valve for easy draining. Damn, it would be light proof too. You'd have to cover up your air pump somehow so it wasn't exposed to the elements (rain really) or excessive heat. Hmmm
