Ok so very simply put I need to know if I can use 24hrs of light for seedlings or rather the standard 18/6. If I can go for 24hrs, How long can I keep the 24hrs without turning my fems into herms...

I had my seedlings in 24 hours of light... transplanted to 1 gal. pots under 24 hrs and just now I discovered a 5" tall male plant... How is this possible. They have all been under 24 hrs light since birth.

But the 24hrs of light worked great for starting my seeds.

24/0 all the way is fine, you will not ever turn your plants hermie that way. some like to go 24/0 first 2 weeks then go down to 20/4 or 18/6 till 12/12 but its up to you and what kind of lighting your using and how much space you have, imo most of the growth during the dark period is stretch growth.

I would go 20/4 or 18/6 plants need a rest time.
i see people say that all the time but ive never seen it proven, can you? no offense of course. the comeback of its natural is not gonna work cuz parts of alaska get constant light during the summer and the grow journal we used to have on here from the alaska guy had monster plants that did amazing.:bigjoint::eyesmoke:

From the beginning I kept my sprouts on a 24 hour cycle. I was feeding them the Cutting Edge Solutions at the proper mixture and the plants didn't seem to grow very much at all. I'd heard about 18/6 cycle and recently even a 14/10 cycle. I kind of ignored it until a friend of mine who is an amazing grower (if you see my first grow, the two taller plants are his indoor purps) said that plants need a resting period, and I had read they still absorb nutrients and grow better.

I recently switched to an 18/6 cycle and the changes were immediate. I now have 3-6" plants which I believe are already showing sex and the majority seem to be female.

Going on with the rest period, I read earlier a 14/10 will increase your amount of females, as well is increased nitrogen in the cycle, and keeping the room temperature perfect as well as the right humidity. Given the perfect growing situations you "may produce over 90% females", and I say this in quotes because I'm not claiming this is true.

I will be testing the 14/10 cycle with my smaller chamber, I'll let you know how it works.

Of course my increased growth could have been changes to better lighting, or adding Root Organics to my mix, but know that it's obvious that the right situations will propel growth. Also they have very nice roots and strong firm stems.

If of course you want to slow growth, maybe a 20/4 or 22/4 cycle may slow growth but still give it a resting period? Just a theory.

And on second thought, maybe it's good to go 24 hours first until sprouts appear with a leaf or two then switch to 18.

Maybe the seed company gave you autos?

I use 24/0 through the entire vegetative phase and I've had nothing but excellent results. Despite much of the common "wisdom" out there, a shallow study of botany will reveal that while many, if not most, plants do indeed need a period of dark/rest daily for optimal growth, Cannabis does NOT fall into that category. Marijuana doesn't need a dark period like many species do for vegetative growth. It won't hurt to give it some dark time, and it might help on the electric bill a bit, but the level of mythology about 24/0 lighting (causing hermies, stunted growth, etc, ad nauseum) is ridiculous. I Never use anything but 24/0 for veg and I (now) always use feminized seeds or clones from mothers that were grown from fem seeds. Haven't had a hermie or a stunted plant yet!!! I tried 18/6 a bit, but I saw no gains and in fact perceived that the nodes were spaced farther apart (ie. the plants stretched more in the dark periods). I like to grow bushes, not trees --- 24/0 seems (at least in my personal experience --- your mileage may vary!) to work best for me. Just my $.02 worth.

I actually haven't purchased any seeds online yet, all the seeds I've grown were from the mixed weed bags I bought that didn't have the seeds removed.

I like the 18/6 cycle myself because it's cutting on the electric bill, and because I have four separate rooms with plants in them, I kind of want to utilize it.

I'm not claiming to be knowledgeable on botany or any kind of studies whatsoever. I'm on my first every grow up and I'm going off of what I have experienced just in the last 2 months, but everyone does have their own methods that works.

That's why IMO, it's best to study the guidelines for growing, and adapt it to your growing style.
