Yeah, I've read Castanedos, interesting stuff. I've been at the end of the silver cord a few times, almost cut it loose once, the closest I've come to killing myself. If you cut it loose you die, correction, your body dies and you stay in the spirit world. At the time I was young and thought I needed to come back and finish my destiny. If it happened now @ 65, I might let it go and see what happens. The spirit is beckoning you the entire time to come over, very subtle but present nontheless. You'll notice that Don Juan never let go of the silver cord. The last time I was that far into the spirit, I ran accross a river without getting my feet wet, about a 60 ft wide river, actually had a witness to this and you should have seen the look on her face!Med, Carlos Castaneda's writings delve into metaphysical world that few people knows exists.
Certain religions ever get into this, Hinduism is about the only other one that I can think of at this time.
