The aeration is very poor when wet, I don't think the roots would receive enough oxygen. Perlite is close enough to sand...you can grow in that.

If he is using nutrient solutions at every watering, I can see how it could work.

Sand is a neutral medium that provides little or no nutrients.

He must add everything his plants need.

It's basically a hydroponic system.

Sand drains easily. Really TOO easily unless he is recovering the nutrient rich fluids. It does compact, but in my experience it doesn't restrict drainage.

to use sand you would have to use some sort of v-drip system or something like that...

in which case the water/nute solution used to feed with would have ample dissolved oxygen in it to allow the roots to grow....

so yea... sand would work...

its not ideal as it is heavier when completely soaked... but is a drip system where there would be time for it to dry out do to absorbtion by the roots and its not completely saturated at all the time it would work just fine...

DuPont was able to prove that you can grow a garden in the desert, they said all you need is water. Growing in sand will work but I fail to see any big advantage to doing so. Maybe it helps to keep the plant from falling over as it would anchor itself pretty well in sand but what a mess! Dunno.

very true you need something in the pot to hold the hutes in. it all going to run out fast and dry out very fast. you would have to hit them quit a bit with sum heavy nutes i wouldtend to think. but now iif you do a layer of soil sand soil sand. that wouldwork out great also.thisis howmy back yard is sanddirt sand dirt. grow some bigass plants.

ya iasked him about nutes n he said he uses alot for his sand setup, mentioned somethin about flooding the roots on a specific schedule.

i thought there would be too many salts in the sand but from this thread it seems possible to grow in, maybe not necessary but jus a way of doin things.

got his number cus he seemed like a homie as well have hydro hookups.. if i see his setup ill post some pics..

with the kind of drainage he was getting there was no chance of salt build up, nowif it waz in soil and he did that chances are a whole hell of a lot greater.

Sand is technically a size not a type.
For example sand could be wood, rock, metal, plastic or anything really of a particular size.
