funny thing is, i grew up in "gold country" and have only been panning a few times. never with much luck either. the people that live here are wise enough not to bother. it's still very tempting though. :blsmoke:

I watched something the other day that explained how all that gold was deposited...kinda makes one want to go try...

One of my buddies was big into panning and had quite a bit but it surely didnt look anything like that. That looks weird....but very cool :hump:

because that's not placer gold ;) like the kind you would get from panning.
thats a gold vein, probably extracted from a peice of quartz... usually where u find em lookin like that.
is something like that turned up in my pan, lol i wouldnt be talking about it... id be moving upstream, bout 6 ft @ a time lol...
ive got a chunk of quartz sandstone bout 1' diameter roughly, its loaded with placer gold. actually found it in wext virginia, of all places.

thats the good stuff there too.... rare to find nuggets like that nowadays, most of em been found!

There's still gold in the streams in the hills around here, but you really have to work at it. Most folks spend way more than they make. That little dredge with the little Honda motor is expensive.

The sense of adventure is awesome... but then you realize how much work it is and how little you are rewarded for it. I enjoyed it though the few times I went. Grubbing for gems is fun too. Got about twenty small rubys and sapphires when I grubbed.

could somebody point me in the right direction? i'm not looking for anything but a fun day with the wife and kid. my son went gold panning on a field trip a few years back and enjoyed it but found nothing. to find a jem would be cool. even crystals. i'm seeking an "experience" more than anything. not really looking for riches.

i guess i need to do some research.

I saw a history channel special once about gold prospecting, along with things like sapphires and rubys i really want to do it. All the places they said were good though would involve a plane ticket, and thats when its not worth it.

and thats where it gets tricky...

if not trespassing you'll get sued for infringing on mineral rights or some silly BS.

though if a man did his homework and a little research, and maybe found out where there were some old hydro mining sites in the area, you might have some luck downstream (and sometimes upstream) from those old sites...
alot of the strikes that were played out a century ago, sometimes new veins/deposits get unearthed as time goes by, earthquakes, erosion, etc etc. back in those old days they didnt have ground penetrating radar, so if a vein dried up or a deposit thinned out, more often than not they just packed up and left.... and could have been 3 feet from the next big hit.....

I'm on the east coast and what I did was on a trip with my grandmother who has taken up the hobby of collecting gems. Wish I could afford that. The panning we did (that wasn't at a tourist trap) was in a shallow stream off of road and nobody said anything. The odds of finding anything significant are slim but that is when people say something about it. My advice would be go to a state or national forest, maybe near an old mine, and if you find anything other than flake keep your mouth shut.
