Security Camera Idea

So, I am currently about to start my first grow... just finishing up building the veg and flower boxes now. I live alone and work during the day, so I am concerned about bad things happening with the grow while I am away, like a fire. I am setting it all up in a closet in a spare bedroom in my townhouse. I bought this cheap webcam and had an idea. I am thinking of setting up the webcam to broadcast live feed of my grow so I can watch it from work and if something happens like a fire or something where I need to go home fast I will be able to leave work and hopefully be able to get home in time to stop a fire from burning the place down. Do I really need to be this concerned about fires? What about when I have to go out of town and the lights have to be on the timer without me there?

Has anyone ever thought of using security cameras to view their grow while away? I am thinking of posting the live cam feed through a website I host and build and have it have password access of course so I can view the cam from anywhere by going to my site.

Any thoughts? Suggestions?

my buddy just gave me a bunch of security camera he had at his buisnesses that he closed down. I was going to put one in the grow room, one at the front door and one looking at the driveway. They will all hook up to a computer in the family room so I can keep a eye on anything and everything.

And I can remote desktop into that computer from my laptop, iPhone or the forthcoming ipad to view my cameras anywhere

well, taking the questions a bit out of order

worry about fire? damn right to worry about fire
a whole lot of bad things can happen from fire arrests, injury and/or death

i have thought about the security cam, doesn't hurt
but may not be able to help in time, fires will likely be well progressed by the time it becomes apparent on a camera

there are wireless fire alarms that can communicate to a computer, then alert you

best of all is good electrical practices, here's a few of mine

for an extension cord, First Alert makes one that senses a breakdown in insulation, will break circuit in milliseconds if detected

$8 at walmart

my grow chamber is all metal, cfl's in ceramic sockets, metal dome

i have smaller cords that could burn, they are on inflammable surfaces, ceramic tiles - aluminum sheeting protects wall from cord fire

i've had one in my grow room since day one, too many things happening in there that need to be watched.
besides, it's cool to see your plants anytime u want to.
i might be concerned about the remote thing though, can other people p/u your broadcast??

I would use password protection and would not show any green in the video feed. I would point the remote accessible camera in the room the boxes are in and just show the boxes, so all it appears to be is a cam feed of a box.... or if that looks suspicious just show closet floor in front of box or door. I work close to home so I can get there fast.

i have a webcam looking at my grow.
i have a logitech quickcam pro 9000,
it cost me around 100$ but its the best webcam out right now,
it can shoot HD video at 1280x720,
and takes pictures in 8mp.

i have that webcam hooked up to a laptop thats in my grow room,
i have it stream live broadcast to my iphone when im away,
and i also have the setting when the webcam detects movement it sends me a text message and a pic of the precise moment that movement was detected, pretty ridiculous:eyesmoke:

Awesome, how do you have it streaming to you? What about the alert text to your cell?
