Hello everybody here at RIU! I am starting my first medical grow........I have a question that I am sure has been answered but I cant seem to find it. I have a 400w mh/hps setup that is air cooled in a 2'x4'x5' grow tent. I have 3 seeds started 2 blue mystic and one raspberry cough...... Temps range between 80 to 85 during the days. I was wondering how far the light should be kept from the plants? Thank you all for the help!!!!

u should put ur hand on top of the plants under the light, and if its too hot for your hand, its too hot for ur girls.
HID lights should be about 6 in. - 1 ft. over the tops:mrgreen:

1 foot candle = 1 lumen
Not quite...

I'll just copy and paste some info I found on converting from one to the other:

www.ehow.com said:
A footcandle is the amount of light a candle generates when it is 1 foot away. For example, if you have a lightbulb which is said to produce 50 footcandles of light, it means that it produces the same amount of light that 50 candles would emit from 1 foot away. As you move farther from the light, the light gets dimmer and the number of footcandles decreases.

The lumen, on the other hand, is the total amount of light that is being given off by the source. This number doesn't change with distance because the measurement pertains only to the source of light, not the perspective of another object or person.

There isn't a direct conversion simply for the footcandle to the lumen because they are two different physical properties. There is no real comparison for these two, either, but there is another conversion available. As you will find with online unit converters, footcandles are converted into lumens per square foot, which is actually a simple conversion.

One foot candle is equal to approximately 1 lumen per square foot. So if you have 10 footcandles, you have 10 lumens per square foot. This is an approximation, though.

I am currently using a 400W MH/HPS. For my seedlings, I put my light around 28" high with no problems. Right now, my light is around 5-10" above the tops. As the plant grows, I try to get the light as close to the tops using the hand test. If you stick your hand under the light for 10-15 seconds and it burns, raise the light.
