Noob Questions

Hey guys! I'm SarrixxStoner :D I live in Perth, Western Australia and I love my weed! I have been smoking weed for about 4/5 years now, however I have had very little interaction or experience with growing cannabis before. The furthest I have gotten was giving my mate a seed, cutting a coke can in half, filling the bottom half with soil from outside (good soil though, it came from a vineyard), putting a seed in and having it grow to about 4" tall with about 5 or 6 leaves. It died because my friend decided he couldn't be bothered watering it anymore :wall:

Anyhow, I have now decided to take the plunge into growing weed for myself so I don't have to go on a day long trip to get some! I figure it partially ties in with one of my other hobbies which is aquariums (in the sense that we use same lighting types, test for some of the same checmicals in soil/water etc.)

Anyway, I have a few questions:
1) What are the risks of buying seeds online, and imported from overseas? Is it worth the risk? Are there any serious consequences? (I suspect there are).

2) What would be a good strain to go with if I want a short(ish) plant with a good yield, in the shortest time possible? I'm guessing it would be a strain with a high Indica percentage?

3) Is it possible to grow cannabis in a fish tank? I have heard stories of gardeners growing plants in fish tanks almost as if it were a miniature greenhouse.

4) Metal Hallides are not a possible lighting source for me to use, what would be another good lighting choice (preferably one that doesnt hang from a roof) but is also easy(ish) on the wallet?

Most definately more questions to come as I think of them! All help is appreciated!

Keep high! :eyesmoke:

I been ordering online from gypsy nirvana's seed boutique for years and they are very good and discreet. If you are worried have them sent to another address not where you are gonna grow. Yea Indica's would be what you want...or even better would be the auto-flower plants. They Start flowering as soon as the seed sprouts. You will see them on the seed company catalogue's. No way man!! Forget the fish tank...Grow in a pot or bucket with drain holes. And You can get cfl (compact flouresent light) from almost any store now for a few dollars. Get the 6500 K for vegging and the 2700 K for flower. Get the 26w cfl's atleast 2 per plant but more is always better

cherry popping grow technic (get a few grows under your built before jumping into advanced cultivation, learn the basic)bongsmilie

a good location, soil, nutes, lights, and co2 can only take you so far
big buds and good yeilds are based on genes and growing skills

plant life is tipicaly
2wks-1month veg 24/0 or 18/6
2-3 month flower 12/12
4 months (maybe 3) all together from seed to cured smoke

everything can be found at any bigbox store

place seed in a cup of water
check every day untill you see seed crack and or tap root
then place in a 1in deep hole covered with soil, in a 1 gal pot full of soil
now get a digital thermometer, one with a temperature and a humidty gauge
maintain lights on temps of 70-80 (with co2 you can let it go as high as 95)
at lights off stay above 60. keep humidity around 40%-60% light on/off
when you see a sprout
place light (26 or 42 watt CFL with hood and clamp) over it keeping light as close as 2-4 in. as the plant gets bigger add more light (if you use mh or hps follow light distance guidelines, you'll find out more about them as you advance in you grow skill)
now time for veg growth
get a light with hood (and put it on an on/off timer set timer for 18/6
water plants ever 2-3 days or when soil is dry
after 2 weeks of just plain water introduce nutes at 1/4 strength, every other water
inrich air with co2 if you gat it (not needed if less then 6 plants, just open a window or pump in fresh air)
after 2wks too a months of vegging its time to sex and flower
tranpants to a 3-5gal pot
if still useing CFL's double or triple the amount of lights (the more light the more dence and bigger the buds will be)
set timer for 12/12 (depending on strain plants can double even triple in size (height) in this stage)
this will show sex and flower your plants, giving you smokable buds
keep the female's they grow white hairs
discard the males they grow grape like ball clusters (pollen sacs)
discard the hermi they grow both sex (re. if it has balls on it discard it)
give it 2 wks of 12/12 then increase nutes
lights will stay on 12/12 untill finish which could be 8-14 wks depending on strain dominates :
short plant with fat wide leaf = indacas = 8-10 wks,
tall plant with long skiny leaf = sativas = 10-14 wks
by far the best way to tell when the plant is ready to harvest is by looking at the trichome
you want to see about a 50% red to white ratio. you will need a minimum 30x zoom microscope (radio shack)
flush plant by feeding plain water for last 2 wks (improves taste)
cut, hang, dry 5-7 days
smoke
or
cure:
place in mason jars sealed tight for 12hr
open jar and take buds out and let dry for 30m - 1hr or untill dry
replace in jars
repeat this for 2wks to a month or untill buds nolonger become wet in jar after 12hr
now smoke
or
seal away for longterm storage

rules to a successful longterm grow
1. tell NOone
2. NEVER ever break rule 1
3. dont grow where you dont own
4. restrict weapons of any kind on property
5. be seen, but keep a low profile in community
6. suppress or eliminate odors emanating from grow room
7. pay your bills
8. descretly acquire & place items
9. descretly despose of waste
10. don't talk to the police. if caught tell them your name and ask for your lawyer. say nothing, sign nothing. sign nothing that says you said nothing. ask for your lawyer

Actually I think probably your best bet would be do grow your first round with some local commercial seeds so that way you wont kill any expensive seeds/plants. You will figure out what they like best and when you feel you can flower some good plants buy some seeds

Thanks for the help man! What are the details of the auto-flowering plants? What makes them flower so early?
As for the fish tank, I feel I haven't explained myself well enough.
The plants would be in pots, but then each pot would be placed on a brick (or something to help the pots drain down) inside the fish tank. Would probably also chuck a small fan inside the fish tank to provide some ventilation. This way the plants don't drown, the heat is contained inside the aquarium, the light is sort of focused on the inside of the aquarium and it is being ventillated with fresh air at the same time.
It's also really cool that you can use compact fluros for growing, I'll go grab a few next week sometime.

I have been looking around locally for about 3 weeks now, rang everyone in my phone books, got them to ask their mates, I have tried everything possible to try get some seeds locally, unfortunatly, I have found no candy which is why I am turning to buying online. As for bagseed, I have not seen any seeds in the bags I buy for a loooong time. Well about 2 or 3 months lol.

the additude is the place to shop they never miss a beat but i am in the states
start out with some northern lights or skunk they r very forgiving
ild say for lighting with a little work you could probly rig up a few extra lights to the tank hood itself i think a tank would be ideal for c02 as well its learn as you go kinda thing have fun
as far as the autos go i just started some they all popped and now seem to be stuck on stupid so i can vouch for them but have seen some other grows on here of them that seemed to turn out ok

Autoflowering strains have that ruderalis in them, look up cannabis ruderalis

Also 18/6 or 24/0 isn't your only option, personally I like to give my plants 4 hours rest, they seemed to like that.. so 24/0

Idk about the aquarium, i think it will be too short... also I've got 250w of cfls for flowering, and like 210 for veg

Yeah I know what ruderalis is, thanks for answering the question! :)

I have many an aquarium in my house, should be easy enough to move the plants to larger aquariums as they out grow the others.

Northern lights is actually pretty nice too, might give that a try when it comes around to it! First I have to buy the seeds
Yea thats right about the Northern Lights. Its a very easy and forgiving strain to grow....perfect for beginners. That strain was created to be grown indoors. I've grown it myself and its very good smoke

I think you are gonna only have problems with a aquarium. Its gonna be poor ventilation, too hot, too humid, too small. Just plant them in a pot without the aquarium so they have fresh air circulation and you will be better off

http://www.seedboutique.com/store/ check that site out its the one I use. It usually takes 7-10 days to ship to usa and I have never had a order i didnt recieve. You will see lots of those auto flower plants here. If you are tight on money check out nirvana seeds in that catalogue, all their seeds are F'2s but I had got some great genetics from them and all their seeds are $30

Northern Lights it is! I guess I'm going to give the aquarium a miss, need to get some money together to buy some lights and some good potting mix then. It's just coming into autumn here in WA, that's why I was concerned about keeping the heat in a restricted space around the plant, but if the lights are all it needs to be grown indoors. May buy a pack of 10 seeds and give the aquarium a try out with one of them just to see how it goes anyway =D

Yea man fall/winter is the perfect time to grow indoors. I always have heat issues in the spring time...The only guy in neighborhood with the airconditioner on at 60 degrees F lol

Hahaha yeah. Well hopefully I'll be ordering my seeds tonight, going to get 2 feminised NL and 2 feminised Papaya (from what ive read they seem easy enough to grow). Once I have ordered them, while I wait for them to come I'll go out and buy 2-4 26w CFL's depending on the price here for the vege stage. I only plan on growing two plants at a time so those lights should suffice right?
