Can I use a HPS bulb in a MH ballast?

I am getting ready to switch to flowering and am going to purchase a HPS bulb and I was wondering if it was ok to just pop it into my light/ballast? Is this possible?

i had the same question as you except i have a 1000w ballast and a 1000 watt MH is way to strong for the amount of veg plants i have (2) way going to try and put in a 400w hps they have the same fittings just not sure how the ballast distributes energy i dont want to chance broken bulb parts in my grow

would you drink out of a fire hose? some people take the risk of playing the swap game i personoly won't take that chane i stick with the rated bulbs for the right ballast

no you can not run a hps bulb in a mh ballast, you can run a mh bulb in a hps ballast.and you can run a lowwer wtt bulb in a higher wtt ballast mh or hps. example you can run a 400wtt bulb in a 100wtt ballast. youcan even run two 400wtt bulbs in a 1000wtt ballast. go to my youtube search for growingmeds i have videos to prove it works.no bulb or ballast failure.

Only way to get your Metal Halide ballast setup to light a HPS bulb is to get a HPS conversion bulb specifically designed to use in a MH ballast.
If you try to just throw a reg HPS bulb in there it won't light. the only ballast that will light both MH and HPS are switchable ballasts or digital ballast

not true. i have no conversion bulb and i don't have a switchable or dig. ballast. they work just fine.
