400w MH too much for 1 mommy?

I'm about to start constructing my room and I'm making all plans final this week before construction starts this weekend...

one of the last things i have to tie up is this: in my veg room I plan to have 1 mother only... and somewhere else in the veg room have a space set aside for the clones that i cut from her (obv clones won't be under the same light)...

my question is: is 1 400w MH too much for a mother plant that i'm planning to train to stay in an 18"x18" area? Considering heat as much major battle, is 400w overkill? should I go 250?

im no expert but from alot of reading on here i think you would be better of with cfl's or flouros.

it would save on the electric bill aswell.

agreed.

I have a 400w mh and I love it, but it's just for seriously vegging 5 or more plants. I also kick it on in the last week of flowering for a huge resin boost. I have some plants in veg over two and a half feet tall after just 3-4 weeks under it. So if you are trying to train it for height, no reason not to go with a high-output 2 or 4 bulb T5. the mh is going to make it grow like crazy.

Heat is NOT as big an issue with the MH, I've found though. But I think you should save your money, it's definitely overkill, unless you plan to expand your op. You can get a complete T5 vegging flouro system for $50 that works nearly as well as a $300 mh setup. and you need less airflow / electricity

you know i hadn't thought about that quite actually... i'm definitely going to look into the flouro route... i'm all about saving energy... and hell, saving money on an additional HID ballast would be great too... thanks for the info guys
