Why not use this instead of an expensive CAN filter?

I'm planning on buying these, putting them in front of my computer exhaust fans then putting ONA pro block inside the light traps that are attached to my comp. fans.
I mean this would make zero smell right?

I don't see why people don't just buy the premade carbon filters and put them in front of their exhaust fans. It's much cheaper

Yes, but obviously, the correlation between cost and the efficiency is not direct. I'm sure that a well made DIY pencil cup carbon filter combined with ONA is more effective than lets say a 50 dollar ozone generator... Or even a 50 dollar CAN filter (if they make them that cheap.

I guess the main point of this thread was to prove a point that sufficient odor control doesn't have to cost hundreds of dollars and that ONA combined with a DIY filter will cost you about 30 dollars and eliminate the smell from almost any grow.

They would work great of you built some kind of box to put them in, and forced air through them. But, to try to blow the air through them by putting them in front of a fan, that's not going to be very effective because too much air will escape around the sides, etc.....I agree though, someone could build a homemade filter if they put in a little effort, and save a few buck in the process.

Im intrigued. I was told by people that fans can pull air through a filter easier than they can push it. What do you mean by putting them inside of some kind of box?
I have a light trap attached to my fan...could I put a carbon filter at the end of my light trap and the air pressure would force through the filter?

By "building a box" I meant that building your own square filter would be fairly easy because those filters are square, and could be placed right inside the box if it was built to the right size.(it would have to be air tight, also) Also, I agree that it's easier to draw air through a filter, than push air through. I was just using that as an example. If you did place those filters behind your fans, it would surely help, it just won't be quite as effective as as regular carbon filter with inline fans.

yea I use the exact carbon filter replacements you posted a link to. What I do is first off sew 2 of the active carbon replacement pad things together, get a hose clamp the size of your fan, 8" in my case. Put the carbon in front of the fan and put the hose clamp over the carbon THEN over the fan, and then tighten the hose clamp... Whala, simple as that... And no need for that expensive ONA gel nonsense! lol

I've used these and they did not work very well. Also, they blocked so much exhaust that my temps went up at least 10 degrees. Just my .02...

i'm with tonail, tried it already and it won't stop the smell... http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=29402 build your own carbon filter like this one. it cost me 80 dollars total in supplies. built mine to be 6 inch inner core with 8 inch outer and 18 inches in length, i use a 440 cfm fan to pull air through it which was another 70 or so. blocked smell for 3 crops in my flower room before it needed fresh carbon and since i made my own i installed the 2 inch plug in the end so i can just pour out the old carbon and pour in the new within minutes. for the 150 or so it cost me initially, it lasted over 6 months and the carbon refill was about 40 bucks. the cool part about that design is you can build them smaller or larger depending on the size of your room and how much you run it. mine was for a 8x8x8 flower room, so you can build accordingly.

No, no smell really. Well, in comparison to when I didn't have the carbon on, yea no smell. I'm always smoking in my appartment anyways, so if there is a smell coming from the actual grow room, you don't know it... You definitely can tell if I DON'T have the carbon on tho! lol, Let's just put it that way.

And what CFM is/was the fan you were using? You probably just didn't have a strong enough fan for this particular situation would be my guess...

able to cover my smell without can filters... Do you know how many of those
sheets you would need to buy to be effective? It would add up to being more
expensive than a Can filter for sure, granulated carbon is way more effective.

agreed, i used those sheets over passive in/out vents on my first grow before i went sealed.. went sealed with cans for a good reason, when you have several plants in a basement and can smell the plants walking by the front of the house, it's bad news. those sheets would make a good prefilter for a can if you are building one. you can't beat the carbon/charcoal can fans

ok, I'm sorry. I do not know how it would even be possible to PROVE this to you without you coming into my house. Can you PROVE to me that yours works 100% perfectly? Because you haven't proven anything either sir. (lol, I'm sure yours does work perfectly! But can YOU prove it to ME?)

I apologise to everyone for stating that sealing 4 of these filters over my fan has reduced the smell quite a bit. I do not smell fresh plant bud when I walk into my house when I get home from work. I guess my nose just doesn't work becuase obviously I'm wrong and these guys can smell my grow room from wherever they are now.

My bad! Sorry again. I agree that getting a legitimate carbon can filter would be 'better'! I just can't afford to be spending $50+ on a carbon can filter. 4 of those sheets that I use cost a whopping $11 at walmart (less actually, I just rounded up)... How much was your can filter again?...

Agreed, prolly so, but it's irrelevant because it did nothing for the smell. Now the can I ended up getting, that's a winner... Again, just my exp.

Man if I could afford a can, and use it with my setup I'd get one. It's just not practical for me.

I agree with what one of the posters said , you can't go cheap on odor removal and that's just the way it is. Don't skimp and cut corners on it.

Take the hit to your wallet and buy something that will deal with the odor 100%.

This is why a lot of people get busted, when it comes to neglecting proper odor removal.

I agree with you on that one! Lucky for me I'm legal, and already have that freedom and piece of mind. So I won't be spending more than $11 on nutralizing odor.
