So I am in El Paso for a few weeks, and I took my girlfriend's car down from Portand. She has my car, and I warned her to keep an eye on the engine temp as it was getting above 50%, just barely, when I left.

She has been noticing the temps get even higher, so today she had the oil changed and the coolant topped off and drives to work. She must have driven the car to 100% heat because when she got to work the thing was steaming and then made a loud pop. She calls AAA and they tow it, they let her know there was coolant on the engine. I diagnose from 2,000 miles away as a busted thermostat and ruptured hose.

But then she calls back after AAA takes it to the mechanic. Busted thermostat AND radiator. I don't know how the fuck a radiator can bust like that, if someone can tell me how, you will get +rep.

In any case, they quote her $700 and without even getting any other opinion or verifying the damage tells them to go ahead...on my dime.

I am pissed. She has the next 4 days off and it is NOT hard to change a radiator and thermostat, and it should not cost more than $150 in parts and 4-5 hours work, even for a dummy like me or her. She refuses to touch the thing, despite my detailed description of how easy it is to change a radiator.

How do I convince her to just do the damn work herself? I don't want to pay an extra $550 just because she does not want to do such a simple thing....

Can anyone tell me if it is not so easy to change a radiator on a 96 Infiniti i30? I bet it is easy as fuck....but who knows.

Rant over.bongsmilie

Heh.... you knew you had a problem before you left. You took her car....

She did try and maintain the car, but it went anyways...and then she has to fix it?

Buy her some candy and promise to never leave her with a headache again.

I can't believe either that you expect your girlfriend to spend 4-5 hours changing a radiator, which she knows nothing about.. That's just crazy.

Then that would be a different story. I could easily imagine a butch-type lesbian getting all dirty and changing a radiator.. but not your average feminine woman.
I dont even know how to change a freakin tire.. let alone a radiator?? lol Pfffttt...

Oh my, it looks as if I have a bit of backlash. And understandably so, I laughed my ass off at how silly I sounded. Good points all around.

In any case, I guess I am a bit slanted as I used to deal with mechanics day in and day out for about 3 years and talked to and met a surprising number of female mechanics who outshined their male counterparts. They were usually the head mechanics, no pun intended.

I guess my beef is that she agreed to $700 for the fix, and it only took me 2 minutes on Google and a slow connection to see that the parts only cost $150 locally, thus they are charging $550 in labor for a job that any mechanic should be able to do in 2-3 hours. All you have to do is pull a few hoses, put in a new thermo, and switch the fans to the new radiator. All you need is bucket, a 10mm and a screwdriver...perhaps a bit oversimplified, but you get the idea

Since the shop already has time in on the car, my solution is to call them and bite their fuckign heads off for this ripoff...I bet they tried to take advantage of my fiancee

And CJ, I took her car because it has better gas mileage and will save her Dad $150+, the one who is paying me to come work here in El Paso. I also told her to take it to a real mechanic and not a jiffy lube place to get the whole car checked for safety...and she ignored me. I also am paying for cab fare to where ever she needs to go in the meantime, even the store that is 1 mile away. So stop chastizing me just because my political opinion is that you are a nutcase...

ya duke go down there and tell those fuckers your wife took your car there without your permision and that you have a better price from another repair shop and that your need your call released immidiatly,

when they start bitchin and mounin, talk them down on price, then reluctently allow them to do the work at the same price the other repair shop quoted you

and to cover your ass call some repair shops before you go and find the lowest quote in case they need it faxed over to them:bigjoint:
