So I am in El Paso for a few weeks, and I took my girlfriend's car down from Portand. She has my car, and I warned her to keep an eye on the engine temp as it was getting above 50%, just barely, when I left.
She has been noticing the temps get even higher, so today she had the oil changed and the coolant topped off and drives to work. She must have driven the car to 100% heat because when she got to work the thing was steaming and then made a loud pop. She calls AAA and they tow it, they let her know there was coolant on the engine. I diagnose from 2,000 miles away as a busted thermostat and ruptured hose.
But then she calls back after AAA takes it to the mechanic. Busted thermostat AND radiator. I don't know how the fuck a radiator can bust like that, if someone can tell me how, you will get +rep.
In any case, they quote her $700 and without even getting any other opinion or verifying the damage tells them to go ahead...on my dime.
I am pissed. She has the next 4 days off and it is NOT hard to change a radiator and thermostat, and it should not cost more than $150 in parts and 4-5 hours work, even for a dummy like me or her. She refuses to touch the thing, despite my detailed description of how easy it is to change a radiator.
How do I convince her to just do the damn work herself? I don't want to pay an extra $550 just because she does not want to do such a simple thing....
Can anyone tell me if it is not so easy to change a radiator on a 96 Infiniti i30? I bet it is easy as fuck....but who knows.
Rant over.
