Fans for stem strength

How strong should the fan be?

Should the plant be obviously pushed by the wind?
Barely be affected by the wind?
or no obvious movement at all?

I go for strong. An oscillating standard 14" fan I set on "1" for the first month...then kick it up to "2" by the end of the first 4-5 weeks...then to full blast by the last month of flower. (the fan is generally about 1 - 2 feet away from the plant)

is it also needed for seedlings? I've started with 3 autos recently, they're about a week since they sprouted, and about 4 or 5 cm tall, but I'm afraid the stem is getting too thin, they look healthy, purple, I'm using good soil and monitoring the ph on water... is the fan a must? They're outdoor, but I'm afraid there's no wind in there...

IMO wait til they at least reach veg and get a little strength.. If they look like they aren't capable of handling a fan yet I wouldn't put it on them..

stem getting to thin??? dude.. no. A cannabis plant.. and its 'main stem'.. doesn't naturally get smaller or thinner. There would have to be something bad wrong with the plant.. in order for the main stem of the plant to actually start to thin or get smaller. It's just not natural.

The idea here people.. when growing indoors... the idea is to imitate nature. It's not rocket science everyone.. most of it.. is common sense.

I can see im going to have to start writing my grow guide for noobs.

Also, when you have a little sprout.. that's only a week or so old.. you never want to aim the fan(s) directly at the plant. This, would eventually cause the plant problems. You just want to see the plants move a little bit.. and as the plant mature's and gets stronger.. so does the main stem of that plant. It ages.. and gets bigger in time.. as the plant matures. But see, having fans blowing air around your plants.. helps ensure that the plant will have a nice robust and strong main stem.. for support.. for when you begin to flower your plant(s). Because once the buds start to get big.. and bigger and bigger.. your plant becomes more and more top-heavy.. and needs a nice healthy and robust main stem to support the heavy weight of the maturing buds.

Yeah, I'm def. going to have to get started on writing my grow guid for noobs.... be watching for it!

Hope this helped..

peace.

Wind does strengthen the stems..

The imitation wind of an oscillating fan breaks down the insides of the stem/branches, then it mends, and gets bigger and stronger.

You will indeed see a difference if you did a side by side comparison.

Its like a bodybuilder who trains hard.. he rips his muscle fibers, and after the recuperation period, his muscles have grown and adapted to lifting even heavier weights.

Ask experienced growers and MANY to MOST of them will disagree... you are not tearing anything when pointing a fan towards stems... Ive done it in the past and noticed NO difference.. Unless you have a study to prove me wrong...

and believe me i thought the same thing until many experienced growers told me it was an " old wives tale." You cannot compare botany to anatomy.

I've seen fans strengthen stems. I've done the comparison. None of the plants w/o fans had stems that were as thick as the ones with fans. Same strain...same nutes...the only difference being fans. Not only do fans aid in stem growth...they also are crucial to a plant being able to dispense with it's biproduct toxins.

imo this is even more important than strengthening the stems.. not to mention it's good to circulate air to constantly get CO2 to the leaves for photosynthesis
