Sure if you can fit 10-15 pounds in jars and still be able to tuck that away discreetly somewhere, that's great. I wish I had as much free space as you. But there comes a point where practicality becomes more important than the best option.
You can put a lot more weed in bags, and if you're not HANDLING them there's no problem with losing trichs. You can put those bags into a single air tight container and you've eliminated both rubbing and the minimal air exhange which occurs with bags. Jars are round, or at best have rounded edges, and thick glass. Every jar wastes space.
Why ya think they're starting to make milk jugs square? You can fit a whole lot more of them in the trailer of a truck.
Yes, but if you have that much weight, to where jars are impractical, well, you certainly have the resources to be able to fill up a warehouse of Jars if need be...
even when not handled, trichs can stick to plastic surfaces at room temp. Glass does not have this problem, even when handled (sure you may have some hairs and small pieces on the bottom, but they easily come out).
As far as the footprint/geometry of the jar are concerned, most people use Mason jars, which are squarish, and readily available and very inexpensive. They also can be reused indefinitely, and even if you have the sides caked with trichs, which would take heating the jar up, you can easily remove any such build up. Plastic bags... well, they fail after so long. Also, as I noted, some cheaper bags may impart a strange flavor to bud, just from the material being of lesser quality. Also, the only bags trusted to be air tight, are your brand names, like zip-loc and glad.
I know some who use those glad plastic containers in lieu of glass jars, but like bags, they have issues with trichs clinging to plastic, as plastic, even in a bag, is much more porous than glass is by molecular structure. polymer chains will always be porous, which also means they actually do have some gas exchange through the material. I know my jars are sealing air tight, every time, all the time. Bags however, often fail, or often do not seal completely. One can witness this, by taking a piece of bread, placing it inside a bag, suck/roll the air out and seal... leave it in your closet or a drawer, or even a safe or vault... and within 24 hours, there will be evidence of the seal being breached 9 times out of 10 (using brand name heavy duty bags). Also, jars can be reused, many times, for many different things... Bags however... can't.
Also, something I have noticed, which is due to polymer chain's porous structure. With bud stored in jars, once you clear the jar, it no longer smells like bud... clear a bag, that bag will always carry the skunky weedy smell. I personally, for long time storage, will vacuum pack my buds, and then place them into jars (after completely cured... in glass jars lol) just in case I ever had to move, and needed to get them sent to myself. This is because glass jars are airtight.
Lastly... police dogs find bags ALL the time... they are trained to do so... and able to do so, because of polymers being porous. I have yet to hear of drug dogs finding sealed glass jars (granted, you may wanna wash it down with IPA first to neutralize any traces on the outside) in or on anyone.
Sure one could argue that storage is not a big deal, if you are smoking a pipe.... Well call me crazy, but I stopped using regular pipes with bud (now for SOME hash ok...), bongs, baked goods, hash pipe, joints (with and without hash rolled in). But one major reason I stopped using a pipe with bud, the ash, the smell, and the harsh effects on the throat. A used pipe is stanky as hell... thus when I am out in LA, I wouldn't want anything that would give any police (even with medical marijuana... you get some cops who don't care) any reason to fuck with me... that includes having a stanky pipe. sure pipes are great when you need a couple hits, but one can just as easily use hash or hash oil in a tobacco cigarette, which is a much more subtle scent wise when smoked, and at glance, nobody will think to the contrary, because they are looking for some pothead with a pipe!!!! Then again, I also clean my bong almost daily with dish soap and hot water, twice a week it gets a quick lye-free easy off spray on all resin coated surfaces, and once a month I clean it thoroughly. I like my bong to not impart any flavor. If I wanna smoke some nasty ashy tasting bud, I'll smoke vape remnants... lol.
All in all, when it comes to bud, good quality glass is the material of choice to storing it... or smoking it... as glass provides stronger, less porous surface which is entirely airtight.
Sure it comes down to preferences, budget constraints, and all that... but for those who have never used a jar to store bud... I suggest you try it sometime.... you won't be disappointed...
