Black Bears in the area!

hello everyone,

There have been a few black bear sightings in my neighborhood over the past few weeks. all the sightings have been in the early mornings. Since my plants are in the woods down the street from me, its possible they could rome around there aswell.

i am wondering if i should abandon the opperation. people have seen cubs so that means there could be a protective mother close by. i really need to check on my plants but not gonna lie, kinda scared i might encounter one.

i've been looking up how to avoid/stop a bear attack. my only possible protection is pepper spray. GUNS ARE NOT AN OPTION.

have any of you guerilla growers ever come across black bears while checking on your crop??

When i lived in colorado we had bears an i heard from the local that they are attrackted to the smell of the pepper spray, i quess it smells like mexican food from there dumpster dives. And its not strong enough to stop a charging bear. Many locals use wasp spray,its cheeper an better

So when i was solo hiking i would carry "wasp/hornet spray" its got about 20 ft range an will blind em, prolly permanently.

But the main thing with em is make noise so they hear you coming an you dont suprize em , or get inbetween the cubs an mama. They are realy big wimps. I used to hang a beer can with some rocks in it on my backback so as i walkled it would act like a cowbell.

no need to be afraid of the bear-
stay away from the cubs and den, as a rule of thumb, if you scare the bear and it's cubs aren't present will run, f you act like a bigger bear
the dog and i have come across dens with cubs in em on a couple different occasions and the worst we got was a swipe across the nose, but we did get the hell out, other than that all the other bear encounters i've had, i definitely felt in controll of the situation

I must warn that pepper spray is a great way to piss off a beast for sure! I can not imagine the size of the brick one would shit to meat a bear in the middle of the woods with no weapons. I use Lion urine and that seems to keep away the large preditors from eating my ladies. I can say that wont prevent a run in with a big momma, and like my old man taught me...this is where getting caught with one seriously out weights getting caught without one.......at least one gun! Even it its illegal for u to possess a weapon, I would find one of some assortment. Good Luck! FIRE IN DA HOLE!

Bears are wild animals.. and very unpredictable. So, I don't agree with you on the "felt in control" of the situation statement.. if that bear wanted to catch you and tare into your ass.. he/she would have done just that... and there wouldn't have been anything you could have done about it man. Just thought I would let you in on that.. just a fun fact about bears.

Agreed. Bears will usually run away, ESP is you have a dog with ya. Being in control of a situation with a bear is an oxymoron. The bear is always in control. If the Bear wants to attack you, it will. I've lived in the woods my entire life. Bears are the only thing I am afraid of. I don't like fucking around with a 3-500 pound bear. I encountered a bear last week while I was visiting my plots. My 75 pound German
shorthair chased a 500 pound bear up a tree! The bear was pissEd! Luckily it didn't have any cubs around.




If you do our best to avoid contact with these animals you will be good. Make noise while walking(crunching sticks, leaves ect) to let the animals know you arOund. Christ, sing to yourself if it makes you feel better.

Just be carefull, bears are no joke.

a 45 isn't much better then pepper spray. Want to piss of a bear shoot it with a 45 auto and see what happens. 44 mag, 45 long colt, 454 casull only if your a good shot. Take your dog with you. Bears have very poor eyesight, they rely on there since of smell as its primary defense. Try to stay upwind and you will probaly never see one. I live were black bears are plentiful never known anyone being attacked.
I shot on in the lungs with a 270 and it ran over 300 yards before dying.

i have never even heard of someone being attacked by a black bear in the northern lower peninsula, and they are everywhere, i have been within calling distance of black bears many times, especially when they come around to get in the trash and coolers and such, they frighten easily, and only once have i ever known someone to have shot a bear in self defense,in the u.p., at night, it was attacking their hung deer, and they were from the city

i don't get afraid in the woods,or at night, and only carry a gun when hunting

just a little fact about michigan boys, thought i'd turn ya onto that

P.S. theses "ferocious, man eating" bears won't dare step foot into the hounds patrol area when she's out, she'll howl like fit and run right into the woods after em

I have seen dogs that made the mistake of corning a bear. Bears can be ferocious. Cost my uncle couple grand in walkers.

All you have to do is make some noise ,Ive scared them off plenty of times and had one within 10 ft before we saw each other.He turned and ran like hell,it startled him more than me.Of course Im a deer hunter and nothing scares me in the woods..

I like in the Rockies, so there are a lot of bears around here.
When you come face to face with one, your mind goes a million miles an hour.
I have never been attacked, but that is more than likely because of my dog.
As stated, just be very aware and make plenty of noise and take the K9 with. If you don't have one, then borrow one from a friend.
