Thai Sticks

i remember thai sticks from the 90s, wrapped with a black twine around small bamboo bits. never knew it was dipped in opium or even the oil....as someone else said, the smoke today has enough poke that whilst it would be nice to go reminise and enjoy some nostalgia of the smoke we cant get now, the smoke i have at home today doesnt leave me wanting for much

I lived in Thailand for three years in the 70s and smoked and abundance of Thai stick. It was wrapped around a sliver of either bamboo or MJ stock and tied with a single fiber from the plant, not string. The stuff that was laced with opium was called Budda Weed and was something to stay away from. I saw guys hooked on that stuff and it destroyed the careers of several people I knew. I use to buy it by the brick and it would last me about 4 months. A brick consisted of 20 sticks about 4 or 5 inches long. The stuff was so potent, if you took a full hit it felt like your lungs would explode. Here in the states, several times I tried what was suppose to be Thai stick but it wasn't. It was just good Humbolt herb made to look like Thai. --- Party on Dude!

I smoked all the above mentioned forms of the legend. Doing some poking around in Nor Cal I found some Chocolope, a cannabis cup winner and keeper of the old school Chocolate Thai genetics. I really want to cure it correctly in the stick form. I will go for the 5 day dry then skewer, tie and 10 day more dry method. That could muddle the flavor if done wrong but this sounds like a good way to do it. Does anyone have a trichrome memory of reference? Seems that the original land race choco Thai was late harvest to drive up the cannabinoid level, then cut or skirted on the vine to bring out the golden brown cure from the sun before the wrap and final cure.

Ok, obviously no old school stoners on here atm...
Grow weed(good weed), bud, harvest, STRIP STEM OF PLANT, WRAP STEM AROUND BUDS TO CREATE STICKS, CURE...
You can also cure first i guess....
Hold stem strips with twine REAL TIGHT.
Good luck people...

No man, it's the other way around! The little "Popcorn" buds are wrapped around the stick (like a tiny Shish Kabob Skewer, made of split Bamboo or split MJ branch) and held in place by a tiny thread of "hemp fiber", not twine. It's like "Wrap - wrap, add a bud. Wrap - wrap, add a bud" and so on, and so on! By the time they're done, the thing is shaped like a skinny Corn Dog. You had to un-wrap the stick a little at a time and crumble off the sticky pieces of bud by hand - but it was well worth it!

I smoked plenty of Thai stick in the 70's. The real stuff came on a 7 inch stick, wrapped in a hemp fiber, and normally pressed into a bundle for transport. It wasn't treated with anything, however it was the first mature seedless crystallized weed most people in the States ever saw. As it could knock you on your ass w/ 1-2 tokes and you could see the crystals, the rumors that it was treated w/ hash oil, opium etc began to fly. How else could mere weed knock those he-man tokers on their butts with a single hit?

Now the fake Thai Stick made in the States circa '74/'75 was generally treated with hash oil or embalming fluid, but you could spot that crap in a second. It was stuck on BBQ skewers with sewing thread. It would get you high as a kite but it was real geeky buzz.

There was a shorter stick that came out of NorCal in the late 70's. Fluffy, untrimmed, unseeded bud slightly better than the better commercial Colombian on the East Cost. It weighed in at about an 8th of an ounce and ran about 5 bucks a stick.

Now,the Buddha Weed I remember from that era wasn't treated with anything. It was just a good strain of weed from up near the Thai/Burmese border. In fact it was often called Burmese in the late 60's/early 70's and carried a hefty price for those days,40-60 an O Stateside, however it wasn't as strong as stick weed. The Thai Stick came in at 14-16 sticks per O and sold between 150 and 180 bucks an O in the States.

If the Buddha the guy above ran into was treated,I would suspect heroin as it's dirt cheap in that region.

Thai Stick was more about the way quality cannabis was packaged and presented in SE Asia at that time. You could get it all over the region, except oddly enough in most of Thailand. With exception of a couple of guys from the north,I never met a Thai who knew what the hell it was.

The last honest to God Thai stick I ran across was from a Merchant seaman buddy who picked up an O in Hong Kong circa '81. I don't know if it exists now,I hope it does. The rumor is that Trainwreck,is the old Thai Stick strain but who knows?
