i am trying to extend the wiring that goes to my light from ballast equipment. Can i use any regular extension cord wire or does it need to be a certain type? where i can buy this wire?

if you are going to change it anyway, take a 2 or 3 inch piece of your current cord to a hardware store and have them get you a size bigger in the length you want/need, the added size will deal with any heat from the extra length

longer length adds resistence, (I'm a tech) causes heat, cords are designed with this in mind, if you add length without increasing the wire guage you will increase the heat and potential fire danger

so if the bulb and ballast are 250watts, then the cord needs to be able to handle atleast 250w right?

yes cord should handle 4 amps, which is a bit above 250 watts which would be approx 2.6 amps

In the US by law the package, label or tag should say what it is rated at, most construction grade extension cords are 10 amp, heavy duty usually 20 amp (for power tools)
