if you have a quarter from 1955 you can sell it for 3$ and buy a gallon of gas with it just like you couldve in 1955...so the price has never really risen

Its worth its weight in silver is why.Any quarter before 1965 is silver , same with dimes 1964 and prior. The chances are slim of finding one in change these days as they are quite identifiable cos theres no copper stripe around the edge so they stand out.

Sounds like whats known as a star note. When the moneys being printed it gets checked for errors , if any one is it gets removed but to make up the shortfall they print another using the same serial number with a star after it.
Some people collect star notes,it can occur with any US note,i got a $1 star note in change recently.

eh yeah.. nice to know. but that gallon of gas.. won't get you very far. Especially with people these days wanting to "fit in" and drive the biggest car/suv/trucks that are available.

I'm just as guilty though.. I drive a 2007 Escalade with the 6.0 engine. That thing sucks the gas like its nobody's business! That gallon of gas would be sucked up and gone within 10 miles or less. But, I'm about to go trade that gas hog in.. and get one of those new Camaro's. Those things are fucking sweet.

But again, .. thanks?? Very educational. I suppose.. :|

A junk one , yeah.In decent condition they sell for closer to $10.Again , its dependent on mint mark , type of strike etc as to what the value is.

Now Beardo..thats a sweeping statement Sir , some old cents are worth thousands of dollars. You are correct in saying that the value of the copper in pre 83 cents are worth approx 2.5c in scrap copper value. Its illegal to melt them down , illegal if your caught anyway.
Most peeps in the know seperate these pre 83 cents and horde them for scrap.
