Meditation and smoking

What does everyone think about smoking before meditating? It seems to me that it could aid the process but it could also become an unnecessary crutch that would hinder true awareness. Any thoughts?

Indeed.

To be honest, I've experienced some of the best meditation when I was younger, before smoking marijuana regularly. That was long ago. Perhaps I was more 'into' it then, I don't know. The odd thing is, the only time I feel like meditating these days is when I'm under the influence of cannabis. I just can't seem to focus or put much energy into it being sober, and I usually fall asleep before accomplishing anything.

When I smoke, though, I have a hard time suppressing my thoughts. It's like a paradox of some kind. :-|

I find I am able to focus better on one thing when I smoke, and not get emotionally involved. For instance, my poker play (I play online regularly) is a lot better if I smoke. So perhaps focus during mediation would be a good thing if you smoke to better focus on your breath, for example. But isn't "focus" a type of thought?...paradox indeed.

Well if focus does require thought, perhaps it's best to focus on focusing, because that would allow you to think of one thought rather than several different things? :-| lol........

You play on-line poker? For money?

Feel like losing?

I typically meditate after smoking, but I don't think it's a physical anchor of any sort. I find it usually helps me tap into the serenity of the experience.

Something to try, though, is something I call social meditation. It's where a group of people, with a hookah, sit in comfortable positions and meditate, but also periodically come back and discuss their thoughts.

Play for money? I would never do anything illegal. But if I did, I would play on FullTilt or UB and you could name the time if YOU feel like losing

lol
