how many lights to plants?

I have never grown indoors but plan to do so within a year.

So the question is, how many plants can you put under one light? Lets say I have a 600w HPS, how many plants can I put under it and grow well?

I always heard the rule of thumb is 35 watts per square foot. Is that a good rule or should you go higher or lower?

i have a grow tent 40 x 40 x78 .. with a 400 watt hps and i can do 4 nice sized plants .. heres my last summer grow in that same tent
i say u can prolly pull off 6 nice plants

Wow, 6 plants only for 600w? Thats surprising

Because I was wanting to set up a perpetual grow op starting off with like a 1000w MH and 1000w HPS and have like 15 plants under each one. I wouldnt want them to get to big during veg, maybe 18 inches before budding them.

u gonna have a light mover?? cuz u gonna have to be rotating your plants around alot to get even light distributed to all sides of your plants .. or a huge ass reflector...depends on the size of the room u gonna have them in... in that video i only veg'd for 3 weeks and they got huge on me once i put them on 12/12

i have 9 under a 1000w hps and that is pushing it. they were 14in when i put them into flower.
heres a pic i took today. there 3.5 weeks into flower
