Organic Nutrients/DWC?

Recently I had a brown slime problem in my DWC. I went to the hydro store to pick up some Hydrozyme. When I arrived I was talking to one of the employees about my problems and he asked me what kind of nutes i was using. I told him Buddha Grow and he responded saying "I heard that some organic nutrients cannot be used in a DWC". I was like damn, to say the least. Has anyone else heard this? The reasoning he gave me made perfect sense. He was mostly talking about a fermentation problem that occurs because of some of the ingredients. I am going to switch to Pure Blend Pro most definitely, there is no way I am putting my babies through this again, it should work perfectly.

So what do you guys think? Is this one of those nasty rumors?:peace:

well i cant speak from experience but i also was under the assumption that hydro specific nutes should be used for hydro.

I have used technafloras bc nutes because they are a good brand of nutes developed for hydro growing.

Im sure someone will chime in that they have used organic nutes and thats fine, but to me if you want a trouble free nute , go for one designed for hydroponics like BC NUTES .

There is your problem, organic nutes. Your basically running a sewage in your dwc with organic nutes that will have plenty of problems in the long run; meaning lots of res change, stability, etc... Benefits of hydro is running a sterile environment meaning free of bacteria. You're already providing plants all its need through the chemical nutes, no need for beneficial bacteria. Those belong in soil application not hydro.

Alot of things comes to play when having root rot. Water temp? DO? Organic nutes and so on.

Some people find it impossible to keep a sterile res, and in that case, beneficial microbes are useful if for no other reason than to displace harmful ones. Hydro plants may not have a need for the 'increased nute uptake' and all the other junk soil growers use bennies for, but when you are plagued by brown slime (slime which is usually caused by organic material in the res, and made worse by enzyme products) the benefit of having white roots in enough.

Bubblerap, I suggest when you switch nutes you go ahead and give everything a really good scrub. Tubs, air stones, testers, anything that has touched your res water. Save the hygrozyme for another time. You want to start out the next batch as clean and sterile as possible, the slime can be relentless even after you've corrected the cause. And of course, practice good res maintenance like keeping water chilled and full of many many bubbles.

OK.....My nurtients are designed for both hydroponic and soil....I have already cleaned out the tank and replaced all the water. the only thing in there is a very diluted amount of nutes and hydrozyme. The hydrozome seems to be working well my roots are white and happy. I put one more air stone in to make 3 ( 2, 12" and 1, 18"). I think it was a combo of res temps and nutes. Thanks for all your help.

Oh and BTW nice Username Hiesenberg I love that show!

Holy shit this is turning into disaster...I got home today and there were bubbles coming up from all cracks below. It had no smell and was clear I checked my res again and there was some bad build up inside again! I just put in the hydrozyme. Is this an effect of it????? Anyway I am preparing to switch out systems wish me luck!

Sorry to hear things arent getting better. Nutrients, additives or ph adjusters which are organic often cause gunk and slime buildup in a DWC. The solution, in addition to good res maintenance, is to add either a sterilzing agent, or benifical microbes, as I told you before. Hygrozyme can be part of a res maintenance schedule, but it isn't really meant for what you are trying to do, and in some cases makes things much worse.

there are alot of opinions on this but i will chime in and say i use both. chemicals and organic at the same time in dwc and my plants love it. They are very brown but thats what color some of my nutes are.If i do get a problem i will flush and rinse the root mass, and start a very basic nute for whatever cycle they are in and hit them with some h2o2 39% for a week and they clean right up. But, i hav not had many problems for a while with mixing them.GOT ROOTS?

Never take advice from someone who hasn't grown in a DWC, at least not when the advice you need is DWC specific. My hydro store guy is a really nice and friendly guy, but when it comes down to it, he doesn't know much at all beyond the marketing pitches hes read.

If I were you I would run plain water with some h2o2 for a few days, and purchase a bottle of dutch master Zone. A bottle is under $20 and lasts forever, and if you find that running a sterile res doesn't work for you, the Zone is still useful for sterilizing rockwool, cleaning up surfaces in your grow room and fighting powdery mildew. Keep the hygrozyme for another time.

use hydrogen peroxide in the tanks with the nutes always it kills bacteria, use plain water with the peroxide for a week should help to fix the high slime build up... I use flora nova nute from g.h they say they are organic and they look it (thick black dookey runs) they make my roots a little brown also but you have to change the water in the tanks at least once a month, twice is best. Brown roots dont mean they arent healthy look at sixstrings roots.. you just dont want a bunch of slime. And make sure no light gets in the tanks either NONE NOTHING ABSOLUTELY NOT A PEEP.

Sorry, your nutes that say for SOIL AND HYDROPONICS really means, Coco, peat based systems, Rockwool, Perlite, ect.... You are basically making a compost tea that your roots are part of the feeding frenzy..sucks for you but you can salvage something. Go buy G.H. Flora series Bloom, and Micro- thats it. mix them 2 parts micro to 1 part bloom. set your ppm to 600 and ph to 5.5 keep pouring in H2o2 3% is fine at 1/4 cup every 3rd day. If your water doesn't look like it did when you made it, then change it. You can salvage them if you need too but true organics does not lay in DWC......sorry

Yea thanks man, I scrapped the entire project, i just lost too much time and effort. i am going to see if i can "clone" The majority of the plants and start them back in a new clean system w/o those organic nutes which were my downfall and then when i mixed in the hydrozyme became much worse. Any advice on the best way to clone the majority of the plant?

there are other nutes available as well, botanicare has an organic brand, organicare which is also great for dwc... sorry to hear you're so hung up in your system... sounds like you're going to have to pull them and sterilize your system... perhaps some diluted bleach... sorry bro...
