I'm being defensive as well. If there is something lurking around my house that could potentially be a serious threat to my health or my pet's health then I will take all measures to ensure that the threat is removed and safety around my dwelling is restored. That's just me though.

my animals see the vet regularly. they have all their shots and there is no threat to my safety or theirs. a little reasearch will tell you this.

opossums eat snails, slugs, rats and mice. they pretty much keep the property free of any other vermin and large insects. they are BENEFICIAL.

the coons are just a nuisance at this point.

there is no threat.

unless you put your hand up to their mouths. then you may get bitten. ;)

you're making it cry. :(

You put your hand up to it's mouth to feed it! You have bigger coconuts than me. That's for sure! haha

no, i put my hand up to it's face so it could smell me. i had no food in my hand when it bit me. it was hiding behind the washing machine so i stuck my hand back there to show it i wasn't gonna hurt it. it had other things in mind.

when they come down off the roof on the cat ramp i stop them and feed them cheese by hand. they love it.

there were 5 of them in my house a few weeks ago. the neighbor saw them going into the storm drain down the street. i think they live down by the creek and travel the storm drains in the evenings and come into the neighborhood to hunt for cat food. i know the creeks around here are full of crawdads. i don't know why they bother scrounging in my kitchen.

Lol...well I once watched a racon open a fridge and then start drinking a beer...they are pretty amazing creatures. Maybe put like a decoy stash of shit for them to get into away from your house so they stop sneaking in. You may have to sedate them yourself and remove them. Specially if the little bastards are in your house. Raccacoons...I know its from a movie... are mean and dirty animals man...

Big tip when dealing with wild animals, is that when you see they are cornered like he was, don't put your hand near it, lol!

In the animals mind, you are coming towards it, it's trapped, it doesn't know what you're going to do so it defends itself.

Lure it out with food next time :)

Thats not entirely true, a health raccoon is a very clean animal - I had one for a pet as a kid. They do develop a musty odor as any furred animal will if not bathed, but they are meticulous about grooming. Opossums on the other hand are not so clean but both can carry rabies and even tho your kitties are vaccinated, your wild pets still could very well attack & that would not end well for a cat.
As far as the mean part, a raccoon can be very vicious - I still have the scars to prove it.

they have 50 teeth. the most of any land dwelling animal. they use them more for scare tactics then they do for defense. they open their mouthes to expose their teeth, if this doesn't scare away the threat then they simply fall over and play dead.
