So this morning all of a sudden my light goes off and my circuit breaker trips.. then I smell something that smells like a circuit board frying... did my ballast just die on me after being used for only about 3 or 4 days??? It's a galaxy 400W.. I tried another bulb just to be sure that wasn't the problem and it won't light either.. UGH!! My ladies should be breaking ground any day now and I have no lights!!! Do any stores sell ballasts?

you might be able to find parts for the one you have. or call the seller and get a new one.

Don't think overloading the outlet would fry the starter. sound like something shorted in the ballast then triped the breaker. but why didn't the surge trip?

It's not overloaded. Nothing on that circuit but the 400W light and a small oscillating fan.

That is whey I love about the old school magnetic ballasts. I bought a used magnetic ballast (400 watt HPS) about 5 years ago. One morning a few weeks ago it didn't light up. I took the housing off the ballast, removed the capacitor and the ignitor and headed to the lighting place to get parts. $44.00 later and I was back in business and it is like brand new again. The power supply rarely goes on them. Everybody can keep their digital ballasts.

I agree, I got my 400w MH for 50 bux,,,its old as hell, the company that made it isnt even in business. but magnetic parts are universal mostly. Everybody can keep their thousand dollar shits. Mine is good the way it is.

Do you have any ventilation, sounds like it over heated.
Plenty of ventilation... the room was only about 77 degrees when it went out... they're sending me a new one.. the situation is now URGENT!!! My girls just popped thru the soil and I have NO LIGHTS.. well I have them under a 40W tube flourescent (like a bathroom mirror light) along with this funky LED flashlight thing I have.. I'm pretty sure this isn't nearly enough... what's a good temporary lighting situation? and will they recover once I get my 400W MH working again?

Hey bro, a 40W FL tube will be fine for the seedlings for now, infact it's better than just penetrating them with MH right off the bat. You'll be fine. Good luck.

Yeah they just popped through the soil you are absolutely wasting money with 400w how many plants? Get a fluoro CFL Daylight bulb and put it very close but watch out for heat

that ballast is toast...........

only buy advance digital ballasts. all the rest, are just highly priced cheaply made firetraps, as you just found out.
an advance ballast costs an arm and a leg, no doubt, but theres a reason-
they dont burn.........

buyer beware.
