How come people dont notice rhythm guitar players?

Well i was wonderin, how come people dont notice or appreciate the rhythm guitarist in a band? All you ever here people talk about is the lead, van halen and wat not. Do people only like the lead? Do chicks like the rhythm?

why would a chick want the dude playing chords and shit when she could have the dude playing some nice sweeps and arpeggios etc? I play various forms of death metal, progressive metal and shred and I couldnt imagine just playing rhythm, it would make me feel weak. What i notice about rhythm guitarists is they usually choose rhythm because they cant play solos or even attempt a sweep or arpeggio. Playing and incorporating some nice sweeps and arpeggios into a solo is a hard thing to do and for some people it takes years to become good at. when you goto a show are you watching the lead or rhythem guitarist during a solo? that should answer your question.

Nothing wrong with rythym, some guys just prefer to stay out of the spotlight, like malcolm young, or john paul jones or even steve winwood. To name three gifted musicians off the top of my head.

no there is not anything wrond with rhythm guitarists but imo its best to have it all down but then again i havent found a lead guitarist that cant play rhythm. I was just pointing out the reason why they are not talked about as much.

I hear ya, i guesss its more of what the focus is when up on stage as well, it is hard to argue that a talented guitarist rippin a wicked solo doesnt stir emotions in people, of course they are going to get more ass than a toilet seat !

Also In a lot of bands the rhythm guitarist is the lead singer. Saying rhythm players are not talented musicians is ridiculous, they have to keep in time and know what the other members are doing while following along improvisations. And I'm sure lead guitarist get tons of chicks, but if these said chicks are out banging dudes in bands they probably don't care too much what instrument they play.

also lead guitarists have to follow just as much as the rhythm and from my own experience and what i have seen, the lead guitarists write most if not all the rhythm parts. i never said rhythm guitarists arent talented, they just are not as talented as most leads.
