Neem comes from a tree that has no known predators. It's organic and it does seem reduce problems but it doesn't actually kill things. It's a bit like bailifs trying to evict you with sweaty socks. At £15 a pop I'm not all that impressed, I was looking for carnage. Am I wrong?

I'm starting to look at nicotine now. Very nasty stuff. Sounds ideal.

Hi tamjam :-)

I used neem in the past but like V12 says it just don't kill them once established. Its a very good preventative though and stinks to high heaven! I went on to try SMC as advertised as suffocating them, but in my experience at least it again does not kill the mites and I've been using it for a year now.

I've read of home made remedies that some say do work and they include things like niccotine, also bicarb of soda, lemon juice, all sorts of concoctions.

I'm trialling different things on Widdecombe as she finishes but they're still there! I've even used a non organic spray in the box, plant out then put it back in afterwards, next morning mostly dead BUT still some of bigger adults moving on the leaf :-( Its a nightmare. Both of my seedlings and my 2 BB cuttings became infested, tell tale white markings in the leaf and a few adults moving. I have had to take a decision to kill the lot and I will have to start completely from new again. I'm germing one SW seed right now and that will be kept in a different part of the house, it will not come into contact or anywhere near widdecombe. I'm gutted but determined to get going again. Real sorry to have to lose those BB's tamjam, but I had to do it if I am ever going to break this infestation. They were looking so healthy apart from the bloody mites.

The fightback begins :-) Widdecombes still swelling and I'm removing mites one by one under a glass, but after that it a fresh start with a new thread. I'm hoping for a solid 14g from Widdecombe to tide me over a bit, she should hit that target given a couple more weeks.

Hey MS, Widde is looking good and swelling up nicely my friend. I think you should hit the mark with another couple weeks.

Peace

Cheers bigman, once shes done I'm going back to some old methods again

Hey V12, I was looking back through some of my old threads here under a previous username! I remembered the sphagnum moss idea you gave me that gave really good results to begin with so I might give it another go. remember the 2 plants per pot thread I ran as 'cerebralvibrator'? well I'm going to take inspiration from that and move on. I'm also going to have another go with a Kush strain, probably a bubba like that little clone that seemed so happy in the moss lining, remember her? (below). Heres a link for anyone who wants to have a quick scan through the thread, like I said different name but you can tell from the cab that its me

Hey ms, I never forgot about the moss. It's the only thing that ever allowed me to clone successfully so it's back in the mix for me to.
I think I'll go play Orgone Accumulator now after your little reminder there cv :)

I just posted up some notes into my private journal so you can see my new beginnings & future plans, they will all include lashings of moss. Let's hope we both do as well as you did with the bubba in the pic.

Hey Mature, I ended up building the cfl box that I sketched out and posted here a week or two ago. I'm hoping there are ways that I can get the airflow more efficient, so I'd appreciate any suggestions you may have.

before: 105w of cfl and plants are in 5˚F over room temp
after: 265w of cfl and 7˚F over room temp

This doesn't seem to be much of a feat, (I was hoping for lower the overall temp) but I'm not sure what experiences others have had with adding cfls and rising temps.

So, I had a metal box fabricated to minimize the volume and fit well in the space to keep the lumens concentrated (which I'm not sure is a good or bad thing as of now). There are two 90mm computer fans for the cfl box's intake and exhaust, that are stronger than my fans which exhaust the box, which are 120mm fans (57cfm) -
for the cabinet, there are passive intakes just underneath the light box that are bringing in cool air. There is 2mm clear acrylic plexiglass bolted on the bottom surface with a clear silicone bead, with silicone on the inside edges, so I'm pretty sure the box is airtight. The box is warm on the top and sides, but not as warm on the intake side, where the fan is over the tip of the light, not the ballast end. The exhaust is over a ballast. I'm going to get another thermometer to measure temp inside the light box.

Also, I couldn't run three 105w cfls at a time, but am able to run two 105w and one 55w. I'm not sure if the power strip I'm running from prevents this, or what.
Its about 77˚ in my room, and 84˚ in the box, and the plants seem to be loving it so far. I think that mounting cfls horizontally is the way to go.

I have some ideas, and thinking that maybe the cool air is getting sucked out too quickly, and I should simply reverse the two ends of the exhaust tube to have a suction, but not as strong of a suction. (but also concerned about having a positive pressure, which may not even be that great)

ok, i'll stop rambling... any ideas? (it seems like it should work better)

i really think you should remove your intake fans. having intake and exhaust in the same cab kinda swirls the air around, but it never exits effiecently. this will also cause problems when you start to stink, HA!! No, the plants. because if you try to filter on exhaust, but you have intake pushing air out of every nook and cranny then all the air wont go through the exhaust. I would leave 2 main exhausts in the up most corners, leave one of the "cool tube" exhaust fans, whichever one reduces your noise foot print the most. and remove ALL intake fans. then take some readings. if they still not quite what you would like then you can turn on the 2nd cool tube exhaust fan.

and you said there is more passive intakes for the main cab area right? as long as that is so then you should be good.

hope that helped. those intake fans are tricky. they work for some areas, but not others.

everything does look top notch. i dont like the metal (it absorbs and radiates heat) but it is a nice hood. hope you get your temps right, and you could probably through a 150 HPS in that thing once you are prepared to take that step.

thanks gumball. I hope we are on the same page, as there is only one intake fan at the moment, which is going into the light box. So, you are suggesting to just have a passive intake for the light box? The thing is, that the metal is noticably cooler on the intake side, maybe meaning that its just pushing all the hot air to the exhaust side. I could also double up the fans on both ends of the exhaust tube, pulling air out. The metal light box is airtight, so the air should move through...

I have a space below this one that is about 2 times as tall, which I want to use for flowering. I'm thinking of using a 150-250w HPS for this space, instead of cfls, as it seems simpler to just build a cool tube for HPS. What would a "good minimum" wattage be for flowering 2 heavily LST'd sativa plants?
I spent the time on this box, because I plan to always veg with cfls, but it seems like flowering with them is not really worth it, for someone who can shell out the extra $100 or so for low-watt hps.
I'd like to do this DIY remote ballast (if it doesn't cause fires)

Mature, pls let me know if you prefer I post elsewhere, I don't want to flood your forum! (this is my first experience on any kind of forum, so I don't really know the etiquette)

Hi bohicular, no problem at all posting here but I'm just letting this thread run itself down and don't look in often. I like the look of that set up, the hood is really good. Have you got things sorted yet? Gumballs right about intakes, when mine came on in the night it would fill the room with the aroma! If I was starting from scratch I'd go for a 4" RVK fan exhaust/ filter and passive intakes, but I'm not sure PC or bathroom fans have the capacity to do that. Its something I'm going to be working on myself shortly.

Cheers tamjam, it's of course good old Bez, I don't how that guy stays so good for his age, must be all that dancing :-) cant quite say the same for Shaun Ryder though! I'm a big fan of the Mondays and Shaun has always been very outspoken on cannabis issues :-) He's whacked on tons of weight over the years while Bez has stayed thin as a rake ...... they make me laugh those two.

I have a Snow White seedling going, I just decided to let it go and see what happens, 12/12 from seed. I stripped that box out completely and used Milton and insect sprays etc. Not a sign of mites so far, totally clean. I'll see how it goes but I still have plans to upgrade, I'd just rather stick with the box if I could though. I'll post a link here soon but it wont be that exciting, just one SW at the moment.

Right, I'll close this thread with the Mondays, Shaun puffing on a joint as usual and growling out those lyrics! Think its a bit out of sync.

Great vid ms. Thanks.
I'm a big fan of the Mondays myself and I have a dvd single you may not have seen featuring Shaun alongside Russell Watson doing their version of Barcelona.
It's a true comedy classic :)
