Yes, it will be controversial.
It is an inane notion that a partner was not allowed to be visit their partner. An unmarried heterosexual couple do not have these problems. It is blatant bigotry period. If someone wants to disagree or hate someone for being homosexual then that is their choice but they should not be able to stop these couples from having the same liberties as other couples.

Over 20 years in the medical field and I have yet to see a homosexual be denied seeing their partner in the hospital. LOLZ!!!!! More complaining about nothing from the left. Go figure.

There are rules in place in which a partner cannot see the other. The problem is not usually the hospital but the family which uses the outdated hospital rules to keep the partner from visiting. The hospitals were too chickenshit to get rid of the rules so the federal gov't had to step in.Over 20 years in the medical field and I have yet to see a homosexual be denied seeing their partner in the hospital. So we have to have the federal govt. step in because some family somewhere wouldn't let a gay partner visit??????? I realize this sort of thing happens rarely but do we need to make a federal case of it? I just don't see this as a big problem at the moment. We are in the middle of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression and we are spending tax dollars on this shit! You are making a sweeping generalization that conservatives are homophobic. I know plenty of homophobic liberals and I even have a few conservative, homosexual friends. Not everybody fits your stereotypes.

yes, we do need the fed gov, protector of the fundamental rights of oft discriminated minority groups, to step in and say 'cut this shit out'. if you were denied this same right due to having some sort of a minority status, i believe you would dub it your top priority and a big problem, economy be damned. but i guess, according to you in your own words (since you have been often correcting people lately who are putting words in your mouth), it is not a top priority to spend tax dollars on 'this shit'. you just called fundamental human rights 'this shit'. nice.

That's right, 'this shit'! compared to the problems we are facing in this country today this is 'shit' by comparison. Draw whatever conclusions you like from my statement. This is trivia compared to, oh, let's say the economy. The wars you libs loathe so much. People are losing their entire livelihoods and we are worried about gays having the right to visit their significant other in the hospital? I would think the constitution already guarantees gays this right but I'm no constitutional attorney. Where is this gays not getting to visit their partners even a problem? How about this? Why don't we fix the economy/employment situation in this country then we can spend all that extra money we are gonna save with Obamacare on making sure everybody gets to visit whomever they choose in the hospital? Deal?

The only reason you feel its not a big deal is because you dont have the problem.....I know a gay man that was with his partner for over 20 years, his "other" got sick and the "others" family blocked this man from seeing his partner....sad, seeing as how they basically disowned the "other" for being gay, but as soon as he was terminally ill they stepped right in and took everything the man had. Its a disgrace.
Its easy to say something is meaningless if it has no effect on you, but try to put yourself in their shoes.

This seems to be more of a family problem to me. I had a relative who got sick. His ex-wife (they had reconciled but the family hated her) tried to come and see him but my family wouldn't allow it. Do we need to make it so the law protects straight people from this form of discrimination too? I just don't see this as a sweeping problem. None of my gay friends (and yes, I have a few) have ever had this problem when a significant other was in the hospital. Maybe we are a little more enlightened in these parts. I just can't imagine that there is that much of this going on.
BTW, I'm very empathetic. I do think it's unfortunate that these things happen i just don't see this problem as a major one. That's all.

I agree it isnt a major problem, but that doesnt mean it cant be corrected. BTW, I'm in an "enlightened" community,it has nothing to do with the community. It has to do with equal rights. At the time his family executed their LEGAL right to keep his partner away, there was nothing the "community" could do but follow the law.....it has since been taken care of on a state level, they now have the SAME rights as straight people. My "enlightened community" even allows gay marriage
