First Attempt at Growing Shrooms. Is this a good start?...

I've done a bit of research. I've found many tutorials, (many of which are similar to this one), and this one seems more appropriate for a beginner such as myself.

I think what makes this growing guide so attractive to me is that it's very easy to understand, (even though there are no pics), and the cost is very low, (about $40).

What are your thoughts on my choice? Do you guys think this is an adequate guide for me to use for my first ever grow?

Yes, but its cheaper and easier if you go this route. Just go to a health food store and get some unbleached brown rice flour ($2.50 lb) then go to a Lowe's and get a bag of vermiculite $5 bucks)..then go to Spores101 and get a syringe for $16 bucks. If you have a pressure cooker, thats all you need. I take that back, you will need perlite too...$4 or $5 bucks at Walmart. Just look up "PF Tek" and you will find everything you need to know. I just wouldent suggest growing from whole grain till you get the operation down pat.

Cheaper than $40? Wouldn't a pressure cooker alone cost about $40?

And I thought the PF Tek was similar to the guide I have.

If you want to grow mushrooms, you need a PC to sterilize your substrate. I have heard of ppl not using them and claiming to have success, but I wont take that chance. ! I like to be sure I am not going to have any problems.

you can boil your jars too, its basicly like a half-assed PC.

Not even close, a PC will bring the jars up to sterilization temps, boiling WILL NOT.
Effects of Temperature on Bacteria Commercial canning temperatures (can only be obtained under pressure)
250°F Food products essentially sterile. C. botulinum spores destroyed. S. aureus toxin not inactivated at these temperatures.

212°F Water boils at sea level Spores of C. botulinum and C. perfringens can survive for hours. Toxin of C. botulinum inactivated.

165°F Most bacteria die; some spore-forming bacteria survive.

140°F No bacteria growth; some survive.

Danger zone
139°F Hottest temperature hands can endure
125°F Some bacterial growth; many survive. Body temperature
98.6°F Greatest bacterial growth and toxin production by some. Room temperature
70°F Rapid bacterial growth and toxin production by some.
Keep food safe: 140°F or above OR 45°F or below

46°F 45°F Some bacterial growth.

Water freezes
32°F No bacterial growth; many survive. 0°F Slow death for many bacteria; some survive.

Close enough for me :)

Yeah, the method I was planning on using uses boiling instead of a PC.

But if I can find a PC for a reasonable price, I may just spring for a PC to be safe.

I might go looking for a PC today.

And also, could anybody please link me to a complete guide on how to grow maybe with pics included. I already have a bunch of guides I saved in my bookmarks, but I just wanna see what you guys would recommend.

And please don't tell me to go to shroomery.org. I've been many times, and I have to say it's just an un-organized pile of articles. No offense. :(

All it takes for your jars to get cantaminated in 1 skin cell, or 1 mold spore! Do you want to risk that? Anyway, just trying to help, hope it works out for you!
