i always use the grinder. what i find is that when the bud is "fluffy" it breaks up into stringy peices and dense bud breaks up more uniformly. when the stringy fluffy bud is put in the bowl the hits are way more harsh because the ratio of air/smoke is off. it burns my throat. the flavor is less concentrated unless you squish the bowl and compact it. with dense bud, i break it up, the peices are small and uniform, and i can literally drop a pinch in and smoke it how it lands and get a much nicer hit. dense bud is also more likely to have a more uniform moisture content from what i can tell, and this makes rolling and smoking a joint easier as well. dense bud usually tastes fresher also, probably because less air gets to the middle. and fluffy is just less weight per meter squared. i see no up side to this fluffy bud.

i actually break up my colas off the main stem and remove any leaf at harvest. you wouldnt find any thing but the smallest of leaves and stem in my final product.
