Rootbound, is it that bad?

So, after checking out the party cup grow off, im confused about this issue. Shouldnt those plants be "rootbound"?

What does "rootbound" mean, and what does it do to the plants overall health?

Does it stop vertical growth?

Always hearing people suggesting bigger containers to avoid this, but all i see are some killer plants in small containers.

Whats the deal?

rootbound is when the roots have no more room to expand in the container they are in.....your plant basically quits growing and you plant can get really confused and start flowering or do crazy shit......!!
put them in a larger container and you dont want to keep transplating alot either...2-3 times max IMO

Yes, it limits size, and therefore yield. Those grow-offs are to see what growers can achieve, using those limits. Bigger is almost always better(unless we're talking ridiculous sizes.lol).

thats like people saying they are TOO high, there isnt such a thing, you can never be high ENOUGH :bongsmilie:

Excellent input, thanks everyone.

Yeah, I was just wondering because of my VERY small space w/ 150W HPS and CFLs. Seems like a better usage of space to have smaller plants. But, i think i have found an almost perfect container, and its square too!! Folgers coffee comes in plastic tubs with handles, think ill try playing with those.

So, what if they do become rootbound, do i pull it from the container and trim up the roots and then add more dirt below?

And, do the "Air Pruning" pots alleviate this?

if it gets rootbound u can let it be or transplant to larger container.always water before u transplant.never cut any roots,be as gentle as possible.

How big do you think they'll be, when finished? You can get some pretty good sized plants in a pot that sized, without becoming badly rootbound. I've vegged plants to 20"+ in 1 gallon pots, which were about the same size as that coffee container(I drink it, myself.lol), without a problem. So, if you're thinking about growing some small autos, or something like that, you should do just fine.

Root space = nutrient consumption potential & general plant health & plant height = budding potential. You won't be able to avoid a rootbound cannabis plant in a pot, but it's something I bet even the plant itself has become genetically accustomed to since the states banned it in the early 20th century. Generation after generation of being stuck indoors has hardened the cannabis plant into one that thrives particularly well in pots, indoors. Don't sweat it.

The following symptoms may be observed if you allow your plants to become root-bound:
    1. Stunted Growth.
    2. Stretching.
    3. Smaller and slower bud production.
    4. Needs watering too often.
    5. Easy to burn with low % nutrient solution mixtures.
    6. Wilting.

Well my area is roughly, 1.5wide and ALMOST 1.0ft deep, 4.0ft tall. I've got about 30" to the light due to equipment in the top. Im going to ditch this cab as it just needs too much work to keep it going. The space is just shitty, Even for a 150HPS. It just wasnt meant to do this, youd understand by looking at the doors. Plus, i outgrew it about 3 weeks into flower, but despite that they are doing well. One of the papaya has A LOT of sativa showing through, it just about went 2X over the other 3.

I plan on using 1.0 gal pots next run, I did the math on the coffee tubs, not even close to a gallon. got 10 clones (2-3 of which) will be mothers eventually.
