2 400w would be magical.. duel 6's might work well also in air cooled tubes but anything bigger is all bad

a 400 watt would do the job, but you could technically go as big as a 1000 watt in that space (...I have, and it was beautiful!) . the bigger the light the more heat you have to deal with. I had my light air cooled and also ducted some a/c into the chamber as well. since i used a/c, i also ran co2. so it depends on the setup you plan to run i guess. maybe a good compromise would be a 600 watt. for your first grow tho, keep it simple.. maybe get a 400watt switchable ballast, so as you step up your garden you could later pop in a metal halide bulb and use it as a veg light. anyway- more light more heat, if you can manage the heat the sky is the limit.

if i went with dual 400w would you put it inside the box or mount them to the top of the box with a peace of glass inbetween?

yea technically you can use a 1000w in that space but then you will have to grow single cola or scrogg with limited hight.. dude you should check out my thread below and try it.. its perfect for your space get one of those dimmable 1000w lumateks or quantoms they work great for low ceilings

uhh... either way he has limited height. what would a light have to do with available vertical space? how would a light determine his choice of growing technique? either way it's a 3x4x4 space. i agree that 2 600's would cover the space more efficiently hands down- no argument. but with his space he could go single cola lollipop style, SOG, SCROG, LST, lay them side ways, etc... he could go any of those ways regardless of his light choice. i assumed a tight budget for a first grow so i suggested a single light system, but if the money is there go 2 600's all the way. in a small space with big light , more important that number of lights is temperature control, thats all i was saying.

".....3 ft wide 4 ft long and 4ft tall

Duel 400, Duel 600's, 1000?
Holy shit! ... and how do you propose he cool it????????

Minus 9 for the pot, 12+6 (min.) for light, that leaves about 18" for plant? And you guys suggest 800+ watts?

I'd be looking at HD / Lowes for a couple of their 100-150 watt jobs... and awsome ventilation / filters.
With that heigth penetration isn't a big deal if he mylars it.

If the light can go outside on top, probably 150's.
400's? Never control the heat in that area without AC.
Light hits the dark leaves / dirt and you've hot heat. Vented hood or not.

(But, they're just my thoughts.):leaf:

Remewmber, "1st grow". Not saying it can't be done, just isn't a real feasable reason that a new grower should put that much strain on his learning on the get-go. So much to learn in the first grows,, why add heat issues?

the light can be mounted on top of the box with a peaice of glass inbetween and the hole inside is myler

right now i have 2 100CFM fan for the in and the out air flow and a 6 inch fan for better ciculation inside the box
