read all the pages w/ great interest, scoping sites for next year same state, same red clay. I think you did great and i know what that work is like hauling gear water- hell hauling yourself out there. Did you ever hear 'copters? Also did you start indoors and if so which light system did you use?
Thanks and enjoy the fruits of your considerable labor.
Thanks, I appreciate the kind sentiments.
Only saw one copter this year. I had video of it, but I must have deleted it in a fit of paranoia one day. I'll put it up again at the end of the season.
The red clay is a formidable foe. If I were to try planting here again, I'd use raised boxes off the ground. I noticed that with time and lots of water, the ground gets soft enough for roots to penetrate (I had it happen with my 5-gallon buckets this year).
Raised beds/boxes would give the plants good size, provide adequate drainage, provide elevated protection from ground living bugs, and keep the roots cool; as opposed to growing in buckets which get hot sitting in the sun all day.
I started outdoors directly in the ground at first, lost 60% mostly due to deer, and in early June, gave up working in the ground and went to buckets.
