What to Tell an Electrician I need 40 Extra Amps in My Apartment for??

Well I live in an apartment and I need to add 40 extra amps to my room. The main pane is in the room I will be growing in so It wouldnt be too much of a hassel for the guy to add 2 20 amps with outlets in the room I need it.

I just need a reason for adding so much extra electricty to my small room, I was thinking to tell him since I live right by a college that Im gonna be running like 5 big super computers or something for college research project. Also since Im pretty sure the panel in my room is just a subpanel from the rest of my building would he need to let the office know what he is doing??, because I really dont need the office in my business right now and asking questoins.

Any ideas, thoughts, or suggestions??

so long as your paying the electrician for his work, i highly doubt that he will ask why your adding the extra amperage... if he does indeed ask, i would say that i'm into repairing computers and often have a few of them running at a time or some crap like that...
and as far as him contacting the main office, i haven't a clue as i live in a house, but good luck with the project..

Because its tha only place I have right now, and even if they did come in they wouldnt know I was growing as my big grow is disguised very well. And plus the management is pretty cool and alwayz tell us before they're coming so i know if I have to clean up.

I'm quite sure he would have to get an order from the leasing office to alter the electrical in your unit. This may even void your deposit, and get you booted, if management finds out. Run a smaller operation...one 15 or 20 amp circuit should handle a 400w grow op. In the same boat, but I manage with what's given.

Nah ima leave it where its at, they dont go through your drawers and other things when they do these things so they will not find my grow if they just walked in to do an inspection.

3 600w hps and and 1000w a/c plus pumps, fans, other extra things in tha room, etc. in a 4x8 grow box disguised as big double dresser/mini-closet.

timmy, as far as growin in an apparment, thats your call, my one point of advice would be, dont give nebody a reason to come into ur apptmnt against ur will, jus play it safe, and like wat somebody said b4, as long as u pay the guy, hes prob not gunna ask questions, nd if he does, well u got two pretty good excuses already, i wouldnt wrry to much.

But im pretty sure they would ask for a spare key or tell me to take it off, but they dont come in that much, so ill just change tha lock again until next time and just tell them I lost my key.

i would definatly recomend rekey the lock outside and also adding one inside

the only reason i air to the side of caution is that a good friend was 'found" last year small descrete and no visitors. They had a tub leak overhead and had to come in door was rekeyed they opened it. When he got home everything was gone, later that day i had to post bail for him

Yea im definately gonna add a deadbolt to my room, i dont think re-keying the front door would be too smart, it would just look too suspiciuos.

I dont really care if they come in as long as they dont go into my room im straight.

Im just worryed bout the electrician having to contact tha office to add any circuits to it. Do you think they would have to??

I wouldn't do it man. The electrician is the least of your worries. Like someone else mentioned, your lease probably specifies any modifications need to be approved by the landlord. I had a friend in college who absolutely hated the color of the cheap carpet in her apartment. So her rich daddy payed to have carpet guys come in a rip the old stuff out and replace it with brand new top of the line carpeting. There was no question that it was an improvement by far and was actually doing the owners a favor. When she moved out, the management charged her something like $400 for an unaproved renovation. So, in the end, the owners got brand new carpeting and actually got PAID for it.

And yes, any legitimate electrician is going to want to speak with the landlord. Is there even room in your subpanel for two new 20A circuits?

If you're determined to do this just wire them up yourself. It's not hard. It took a lot less effort for me to figure out how to add a circuit to a panel than it did to grow good pot...I feared electricity for years, once i finally started messing with it it's not that difficult. Study a book.

do you have washer dryer hookups in your apt? If so, just run as much as you can on 240v and it will keep your amperage way down.
