What good has the U.S. done in the last 10 years?

I have to agree with med here, the middle class was ACCIDENTALLY created via organized labor. Unions gave people better pay and reasonable safety and overtime laws. Now our government is fixing this mistake ( the middle class ) by allowing 20 million illegal Mexican immigrants and counting to walk across our border and drive wages back down, thereby getting rid of the middle class and bringing us slowly back to the haves and the have-nots.
You libertarians (I'm assuming that is what you are) are always blaming government. It is actually the greed of the individuals in government that need to be replaced, and the corporations that so generously ply them with cash to get their bidding done. The government was instituted to be for the people, not the corporations. I believe a universal health plan would be a benefit to the people, but a bane to the corporations, so the corporations rule. I'm pretty sure the people posting anti-universal health care are either well off financially or have a decent health care plan, otherwise they are just plain nuts. What is not a more basic right than health care? I pays my taxes and get nothing in return. Corporations get all the tax breaks and the war profiteers get all the rest. Why am I the only one that sees this disparity? Am I the only low middle income person posting on this site.

When I say the government is fixing the middle clas I mean it is corporations using government influence.

Unions outlived their usefullness about 40 years ago. In this day and age what purpose does a Union serve other than to serve itself?

I'll agree that the unions have gotten a little self important, meaning it's all about what's good for the union and not the workers. Just like our government has been taken over by corporations, unions have also. Where are the stand up union guys like Jimmie Hoffa? The last union I worked with, Teamsters, pushed the company agenda and worked hand in hand to save the company money. The companys threat, fire all the union workers and go non-union, which would have promptly put the union out of that business with an annual income from the drivers in excess of 200,000 dollars. The company locked us out when communications broke down, and hired 200 scabs to run a shadow crew to keep all their regular costomers satisfied, which they were not as the scabs couldn't drive for crap. after 3 weeks the union took the companies proposal which I voted against, and we took a 2.00 an hour cut in pay. What most anti-union people fail to realize is just like our deal, the non-union drivers in the same trade were within a dollar an hour of us and when we took the cut, they also took a cut. Union wages drive up wages in all comparable job descriptions. BTW, the company took the money they saved and gave all their supervisors huge bonusus, typical.

Ok folks I need some help here. I am smoking a bit here - catching up on the political posts and it hit me 'God, what was the last positive change or event the US was involued in implimenting?' I can't think of anything - is it because I'm stoned? God I hope so.

I'm thinking more global change that is positive. Please don't try to tell me the war on terriorism is positive - I don't have the energy today to debate that.

Al Gore's 'Inconvient Truth' might count towards something. Whatever your views of him you got to admit global warming really got media coverage in America after his movie. And since we are one of the biggest contributors - educating us helps the whole world. Although he's a private person. But shit that says it right there, he got more done with one private movie than his whole political career.

So what have we done to help the world lately? Inform me if I'm not seeing something please. But also if none of us can think of anything, then all of us really need to rethink who we are as an American.

We Started A War in 1990 and got attacked in 2001..Thanks Bush Sr..
We are causing Global warming,, which means the world will end soon ..good job america..you really know how to fuck everything up!!

What american companys do is they sell there old computers and tires and everything eles WE are not aloud to burn to shit hole countrys so they can, if its not on american soil, its not an american problem.

I come from a family of union workers, its pretty fucking sad that the union has become just another big company to the point to where they back cheap laber and not the american workers like they once did.I was shocked to find out that unions back illegal immigrants.

The first white house was burnt to the ground, are four fathers rebuilt the white house on swampland to keep outside powers at bay, that idea didnt work so well huh?

I used to be in route sales. I drove a large truck. We were non-union. Sometimes on payday the Teamster organizers would be in the parking lot trying to recruit our drivers. The drivers would pull out their paychecks, show them to the union representatives and say ... "we'll go union just as soon as you can guarantee us paychecks like these." The union reps would quietly walk away. Oh, and by the way ... we worked on straight commission.
