why are f2 hybrids less stable?

pros and cons of f1 vs f2 hybrid seeds? aside from the f2s being cheaper...?

mendels laws

f1 is a 5050 cross. the progency will carry genes of both parents equally.

f2's are breeding the 5050 to a 5050, resulting in 25% mom 25% dad, and 50% of the original cross.

so a jack herer/diesel cross is f2 because the 2 strains being crossed are already crosses?
no, jh and sd crossed would be a jhxsd f1.

if you bred jh to jh or sd to sd, you'd have f2's.

generations start over with new parents, and keep going through inbreeding, continuously breeding offspring to it's siblings

so if they start new geenrations from seed, if i breeded jack herer with jack herer to get more jack seeds, then breeded plants from those seeds with sour diesel plants, would that be a f2 or f1?

kindprincess, you seem to really know what your talking about? do you know about the stability of f2s compared to f1s?

jhxjh = jh f2 gen.

jh f2 gen x diesel results in jh2.1xdiesel, a new f1 cross.

you'll only get f2's and 3's and 4's etc through inbreeding. to do this, you must select a male and female from each generation to carry it to the next. there are no mother plants in ibl's.

on the other hand, some strains are f1 hybrids, and can only be made by crossing a certain female with a certain male. phenotypes play into f1's big time, as you can cross ak and romulan, and it will be different from my akxromulan, because the parents are different. offspring will not be the same.

to answer your q, if you want a stable batch that is uniform, you want a stable ibl (ie, skunk #1) (ibl = inbred line), or a f1 cross. f2's will give you variation, as only half of them will be the cross you seek, and 25% will be mom, and 25% will be dad.

ie

haze x dreamgoddess = purple haze

purple haze x purple haze = ph f2

ph f2 will consist of 25% haze phenos, 50% purple haze phenos, and 25% dreamgoddess phenos.

thansk so much kindprincess, its a little confusing but i think im getting it....

1 last question, hehe....

so if i take a jack herer f2, and cross it with sour diesel lets say, it will become a f1 hybrid and be stable again?

F1 cross of F1 or F2 will vary, no were near stable.
The result will be various of springs from all sides of parents.
You can stabilized them by back crossing or havening stable P1s to start with.

P1 x P1 = F1
F1 x F1 = F2
F1 x F2 = F3
F1 x F3 = F4 From around this point the variety starts to become stable. Around 60% offspring should resemble The F1 ( P1 with some wanting to cube a variety) selected for breeding.
C99 is a variety that as become victim to the belief that C99 x C99 will make Cindy 99 in the same way as F2s and such are listed C99 was P1x F4
Yes they can be C99 F2s etc but not C99 like original with C99 phenos.

All so to many closet hackers starting up seedbanks selling F2 crosses from F1 x F1

For a stable offspring you need a stable Parent
